Exclamation HID lighting hoax

BUYER BEWARE!!! there are several vendors selling HID wanna-be lights on EBAY. HID lamps do not have filaments inside since photon emision is generated as a result of exiting the metal gases with over 5,000 volts of high frequency AC. This high voltage low current start pulse is created with a ballast module. After gas has been exited, the nominal voltage required to maintain photon emision is around 70 volts AC NOT DC. This is why a Ballast module is allways required. None of these vendors even know what HID means. If it has a fillament, it is incandescent.

I thought this looked suspicious and probably a rip .... looked like a regular old bulb and not a xenon tube to me. Amazing the number of ripoff artists out there.

What's worse is that the fake HID halogens are tinted blue in order to simulate the colour of a true HID installation. Tints, by their very nature, detract from the total light amount, so a blue-tinted imitation HID halogen bulb will actually put out less light than an equivalent clear halogen bulb. And the clear halogen bulb will be cheaper.

That said, the Hella or CIBE (sp?) H4 conversion from sealed beams is still a great upgrade since the H4's European beam pattern is far superior to the fuzzy pattern of the 914's standard sealed beams. Of course, the H4 conversion is entirely different from a fake HID setup.
