Speedo Cable
I just recently bought a speedometer cable for a '74 2.0 L. Yes, it was purchased from our gracious host. Anyway, how in the world am I supposed to install it? I thought it would be just like the clutch cable, but it doesn't look like there's a way to get around the fittings on either end. What's the proper way to make this work? Thanks a lot.

I think I pulled my old one out from the engine compartment side. The end that connects to the speedo fits through the hole in the back. I haven't put in my new one yet, but I can if you still need some help.

When I did the last two that I replaced, I taped the front of the new one to the back of the old one (several wraps of 200 mph tape) and had a helper pull the old one out the front as I pushed the new one in from underneath the car. I had to open the tunnel inspection cover and make sure the clips were not holding the cable down and it then went in okay. It helps to pop out the speedo and undo the cable connection at the back first. Kind of push-pull sort of idea but it will go. Good luck.

You need to un-screw the end of the cable from the socket part that clips onto the throttle pedal bellcrank. Once you do, it should fit through the tube in the center tunnel without any problems.... Unless the tube is rusted!
I didn't even tape my old cable to the new. I just pulled the old one into the engine bay, then pushed the new one up through the tube. I did triple-check to make sure that the new throttle cable wasn't wrapped around the clutch cable, though! --DD

Just so y'all know, I got it figured out. My main problem wasn't that it wouldn't go through the hole; it was that once it got through, I couldn't push it any further. I had never seen the center tunnel inspection plate before. There I found that my old cable had been snapped in half because it was bound up against the gearshift linkage adjustment thing. Once I freed that up, the process was not a problem. Thanks for the help.

Good, glad you got it figured out. I installed mine the way DD said, and it works OK, but I have a tough time mashing the speedometer with my foot. Just kidding! ![]() Ed |

DOH! No idea how I got "speedo cable" and "throttle cable" mixed up... I guess I was a bit distracted?
But yeah, I R&R'd the speedo cable (come to think of it, the clutch cable as well!) in just about the same way. --DD
