Help, 1974 914 2.0 Fuel Injection

Hello all, i been looking for the right fuel pump for my 1974 914 2.9 fuel injection. I want to make sure it has the correct psi. I was told there is a difference between the carb and fuel injected. Any help would be great, thanks Sean

The stock pump has three fitting on it and is pretty expensive at this point. If you want the car to be "right" and original, then you really do need that pump. The stock pump puts out up to 50 PSI and a lot of flow, with the regulator bringing that down to the 29 PSI that the fuel injection system needs.

If you don't care as much about originality but still have fuel injection on the motor, then you can go with any decent aftermarket pump as long as it can put out enough pressure and volume. (Most of the pumps meant for EFI can.) I don't think any of them have three ports, so you would eliminate the branch of the fuel system that comes from the "R" port on the stock pump and Y's into the return line, meaning the return line just runs from the fuel pressure regulator back to the tank.

If you have a carburetor conversion on the engine, you need much lower pressure. While it is possible to regulate the stock pump down to the low pressure carbs need (somewhere between 1.5 PI and 5 or so, depending on lots of things) it is an engine fire waiting to happen. There are tons of aftermarket fuel pumps that can put out the relatively low pressure and volume the carbs need. A popular cheap version is the Facet pump, sometimes called the "Facet clacker" because of the noise it makes. There are rotary pumps by Holley and others that tend to be much quieter.
