4 bolt wheel question
Is there a kit to replace the four wheel bolts with studs on the 914-4?

There are screw-in studs, but I was not happy with the ones that came on one of my cars. Thread engagement seemed substandard, and one or two pulled out.
Don't know whose kit it was, though. --DD

Does anyone know what happened to the aluminum hub/adapter kits that allowed using M calipers and Carrera vented rotors? I had a prototype kit on my race car and it required installing the Mercedes master cylinder and allowed moving front brakes to the rear. I could out brake just about any car I ever raced against!

AFAIK, those kind of were abandoned. I think they were "Mueller hubs" after the guy who had designed them. Not sure if very many were made, but I don't know where they could be acquired now.

Hey Dave, hope you are well? The hubs I had were made by that fellow that found 914 #1 in a field or something and ended up going to jail as they said he "stole" it or something. He tried to open a shop here in San Diego but failed. Here is a pict or two of mine.

Yup, Bradholio. He's still around; he consults for various race teams.

They’re usually sold as sets of 16 studs with matching lug nuts, and come in various lengths depending on whether you’re running stock

Just Google 14mm wheel stud. The thread you need is 1.5 so double check that as some cars use 2.0
Measure the overall total length of your existing wheel bolt and add 10mm to be safe. Add whatever thickness the spacers are to that dimension if you use them. Many Porsche parts suppliers have the studs but check the length as they are often too long to suit street drivers. Some sell individual studs and others sell 4, 5 10, 16 or 20 in a pack. Some places charge a fortune and have real quality parts, others sell stuff that is just OK. Typically, you want to see a mention of rolled threads. Stay away from cut threads. Clean the four threaded bolt holes in the hub and the new stud threads that go into the hub thoroughly with brake cleaner, acetone or lacquer thinner. make sure they are dry before installing studs and use the red permanent Loctite intended for studs and screws to install studs into hub. Torque the wheels with new nuts on immediately after the four studs are installed. Use a very small amount of grease or Anti seize on the wheel nut threaded end of the studs or wheel nuts. Do not remove the nuts for a day to be sure the Loctite has reached full strength. Last edited by alfa11; 08-14-2025 at 02:20 PM.. |
