Voltage regulator

Ok so after a 35 mile jaunt all my battery juice is gone. I juiced up the battery with new acid and charged it. Just sitting the battery registers 13.02 Volts. At idle it’s 15 and when I rev the engine the voltage is 17-18 so I have a bad voltage regulator.
Does anyone know how you check the voltage regulator for these cars? There isn’t
much good said about a new one ( they don’t fit etc etc). It would be interesting to use a different VR not intended for these cars.

Thanks in advance

This is the VR I've been using, it's adjustable and seems to work fine. You may need to enlarge the holes in the bracket for the hold down screws to work.

And this checklist on the Pelican site covers basic charging system troubleshooting.
