914 ENGINE UPGRADE NEED ADVISE
MY FRIEND WANTS TO PUT A 6CL. ENGINE IN HIS CAR. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY ADVISE ON HOWMUCH
POWER THE 914 TRANNY CAN HANDLE? HE WANTS TO BUILT A 2.7L OR A 3.0L AND CAN WE PUT WEBER 40IDA ON ANY OF THESE ENGINES? THANK YOU FOR ANY INFO. |

The 901 Tranny (914 origanal tranny) is rated for up to 300hp. Personally, anything over 200hp with that weak 1st gear set up I worry. Although I am planning on putting 245hp to the 901 and drive it until it breaks. Dont know about the weber question.

300hp is the exact number for the rated capacity of the 901 transmission. I have a very strong 2.7 race engine mated to my 901, and only use first for putting around the pits or moving out to the track. I'm usually into second before I start stressing the drive train. Now, as for the Webers. . .yes, you can add Webers to these engines. They will be more tempermental, use more gas, and demand more intervention to make run smoothly than FI. I have Webers on my engine, and I've got them running correctly now. I don't think I'll be screwing with them for a while.

From the 914-6 conversions I have seen around the San Diego area, it tends to be a sno-balling effect. A big six will require a dry sump oil system, front oil cooler, chassis stiffening, bigger brakes front & rear, 5 bolt wheels with bigger tires, fender flares to clear the tires, electrical system mods and probably many other items I forgot. I would recommend checking with shops that have done conversions to see what they had to do and what it would cost even if your friend plans to do it himself. It is roughly 10 to 12 thousand to have a shop do it really well and about 2/3 that if you do the same yourself. I figured I can buy 3, 2.5 liter fours for that money so I didn't do it.

Thank you for responding don. How long have you been driving the car with the 2.7 and what size webers do you have on it, also do you thing a 2.7 is comparable enough to a 3.0? and doesent a 2.7 require less modification than a 3.0?

As previously stated, all the ancillary systems MUST be upgraded as well. Now, to your questions. I've only been driving this conversion for this past season. The work was finally completed this past March. I opted to stay with the 2.7 purely from an economic stand. I didn't require the different flywheel, and my previous clutch (225mm 911S clutch) mated up exactly. An aside about the clutch: If not uprated to handle more specific output, the clutch fails pretty quickly! Completly toasted the clutch at the last track event. DNFs are not fun. The only difference in install between a 2.7 (with carbs) and a 3.0 (with carbs) is the need for a different flywheel and possible clutch. Mike Zois (sp) from the Santa Barbara PCA region has a 914 with a 3.0 and CIS. He's a frequent poster on the RennList, you might ask him for any additional pointers. All you need to do with that is go to www.rennlist.org and scroll down to the 914-6 (Conversion) topic header. Mike reads that section fairly regularly. Now, the unasked question: Is this conversion worth the expense and time and expense (did I say it's expensive?)? In my opinion, ABSOLUTELY! I haven't felt smooth power delivery like this since the very late '60's (if I remember correctly) when I was driving a '69 GTO. It's pretty humbling to be entering a turn and realize that you problably had some speed left that you didn't use. I hope to continue next year and use this new-found performance. One other person you might think about calling is Roy at MotorMeister (800.756.0956). MM did my engine, and I've found both Roy and Lee to be ready, willing and able to answer any and all questions. Some on this and other lists disagrees with me on MM, but I feel that they're honestly trying to provide the best product they can. Just one man's opinion. I completed(?) this conversion this last spring and made a list of the parts required plus a few extra goodies. Also lists suppliers and prices.
"Gods Own Parts List" may be had by sending me some email. I did all the work myself. It isn't cheap and consumed about all my spare time for a year. Is it worth the trouble? You betcha. JPIII |
