Shift kits
I'm considering a shift kit for my 74 2.0; what are your opinions of the Rennshift kit vs. Weltmeister shift kits? Big difference in price...is the Rennshift kit worth it?

They are totally different animals. Neither one will fix problems associated with worn out bushings, so go through your bushings before doing anything. Welt has two kits, one to shorten the throw. If your bushings are worn out the Welt will actually make it feel worse. The other Welt kit is a reverse lockout that has stronger springs and is kind of a pain to install. The Rennshift gives you a new shifter that is spring loaded and gives the feel of a gate. First and reverse are almost impossible to go into by mistake, you have to deffinately want first because the back force is pretty strong which I like since I used to catch first once in a while by mistake and get extremely pissed at myself or the car. I'm real happy with the Rennshift. I got the 20% reduction which is a little longer than the Welt short shift kit but I'm used to it. I know some guys that got the 30% reduction had some clearance issues in the tunnel with the clutch tube. You need to pay close attention to adjusting the Rennshift during install, you get a cd-rom that explains it so it's not too hard. After it's adjusted properly you'll be grinning when you shift. That to me was well worth the price. I had both Welt kits installed before getting the Rennshift.

If it does touch, it is an indication that the clutch tube needs attention, so it may be a blessing in disguise to find this out. I think the spring gates in the RennShift are more important to confident shifting than the throw reduction, which is why the RennShift comes in different levels of throw. |
