As long as I have the engine/tranny out...
I have my engine out, along with the transmission. I needed to replace the oil cooler as it had developed a leak a while back. In addition, I have taken out the pushrod tubes, and plan to replace the o-rings, as well as adjust the timing and so forth. I've also cleaned everything, removed the old clutch and am planning on replacing the 1st gear synchro just out of convenience and prevention.
I'm trying to decide whether or not to pull off the heads and see if any head work needs to be done. I'm nervous about pulling the heads since I've never done anything like that before and I'm worried about breaking something. As it is, the engine burns no oil and seems to run okay (its a 75 1.8 engine). There does appear to be some leakage on at least one or two of the cylinders, and my guess is that with a little lapping compound I might be able to clean up the mating surfaces. Any suggestions here? Should I just leave it alone and not fix what isnt broken, (it is a 1.8 after all) or should I go in and learn something? -Tony

I would leave it alone. But if you want to learn more about engine disassembly/reassembly, this is a good time to start learning. Ultimately, its your decision.
