				"She's makin' good steam, me'lad"

me good ship 914 has a marvelous steam guage, t'show when she's makin full steam, y'know. Does anyone else have this particular behavior quirk? I've always liked it. Temp guage slowly fogs up as the engine temp rises. It's a great effect. Another little nuance of the warming up cycle is that my RPMs stay down around 750-800 when at idle for the first minute or so, then will slowly rise to about 1050 at idle after maybe a minute and a half or two minutes, finally after oil is at operating temp the idle speed becomes about 950 RPM. I think this is due to cold, thick 10-w50 oil thinning out(first 800, then quickly moving up to about 1050), and then a slight decrease in compression after it does makes the idle speed only reach 950.

			Maybe a coolant leak?

Seriously, must be some condensation trapped inside the gauge. The gauge's bimetallic strip (I assume that's what makes it work) heats up and makes the water droplets turn to vapor which fogs up the gauge. Sound reasonable? Maybe in Alabama you need to put those silica gel things inside your gauges.

Happens to most Porsche's. Seriously. I have no I dea why, but I know other 914 owners that this happens to, a few 911 guys and a few 356 guys.

My temp gauge never steams up - of course it's not hooked up to anything (yet!)
