CV Screw

One of the screws where the the CV joint attaches to the trans is stipped! Anyone have a trick for getting this thing off? I've got a big a$$ pair of plyers, but can't get it to budge. Sprayed it down with WD-40, no change.

I'm using the CV joint tool from a local bug store, fits the other 7 screws(pins?) just fine. I hope I'm not SOL....

(and if I am, I'm gonna smack the guy that stripped this thing! )

Get some real penetrating oil and maybe some vice grips. Heat may also help.

got it, vice grips, hammered in the hex tool, added some *heat* and elbow grease, was still a pain in the arse though.

Real penetrating oil might have helped a bit more, too. Try PB Blaster or Aero Kroyl. WD-40 is not a penetrating oil. It is not very useful on stuck fasteners.

If you have stock bolts/screws then they are 12pt.

Not just 12-point. M8 triple square. A regular 12-point Allen wrench will strip the heads--the points are not quite the right size or shape for the socket in the bolt head. If you have these original-style bolts (check to make sure!!), get the right tool. I think we carry it, and so does any shop that specializes in Bugs. Get the "CV Joint socket". They use the same type of fastener as we do.

BTW, the same type of bolt is also used to hold the fan to the fan hub of many (but not all!) 914s.
