Charcoal cannister placement
My '76 has the charcoal cannister just laying up against the back of the engine bay with all the hoses attached. Not very elegant, and kind of in the way. It looks like it originally had a strap of some kind around the middle of its circumference that may have held it in place up on the wall of the rear trunk. Can anyone shed some light for me on the factory set up for this item?

Yup, it did have a strap that held it to the rear wall of the engine bay. Up near the top on the right-hand side. Hmm, maybe 9" or a foot in between the right side of the bay and the right side of the cannister? It's been so long that I forget...

On my 75 it is parallel to the battery.
The same bolt that holds down the battery runs through this strap and is attached along side the battery Joe A. |

Our 1974 has it as Dave noted. There are two spot welds to hold the strap to the rear bulkhead. On my 1973 it is on top of the gas tank, in front of the driver. A strip of galvanized strapping material from a home supply store should suffice to make one. I would paint it flat black before installing with a couple of sheetmetal screws though so it doesn't stand out and get those smog inspectors worried.

Thanks, all -- I found an unused 7mm hole high in the rear trunk wall right where Dave and John said the cannister should be mounted. No sign of spot welds for a bracket though. I have made a temporary hanging strap with some black 1" nylon webbing, but will replace it soon with John's suggestion of a painted galvanized strap from the local hardware store.
