thin metal 914?
In the post about a buyer for a 70 914-6 the fellow talked about the first 1000 914 's were the thin metal variety. Whats that all about.
My dad had a '70 914 that I thought was serial number 565. Could a 914 finding its way to Fort Wayne Indiana in late 1970 be one of the first 1000 made? By the way I am now a senior member of this forum. Just by asking about everything possible about fixing a 914. Who would of thought? ![]() |

They didn't make that many 914-6es, remember. So one of the first thousand could easily have made its way to Fort Wayne IN.
But AFAIK the "thin metal" thing is an urban myth. --DD

Buck,
My 914-6 can be traced to Ft. Wayne before '74, I don't know for sure it was the original owner but probably. And it is #242 of the 914-6's. The 4-cyl cars made it to America first, though, so your car could be earlier. I have a bunch of old Rennlist email posts from a thread where a supposedly in-the-know person claimed the first 500 914-6's were acid-dipped and/or thinner metal. He was debunked, IMO, by the overwhelming evidence from a huge number of people who have early cars which are not lighter than they should be or made of thinner metal (914's are thin enough already ![]() Mark S. Only thing I have heard is that on the earliest cars a few pieces of metal bracing is missing that the later cars have.
ie-around the rear shock towers 914/6 #3 or 4 has been found and purchased. Search the 914club BBS if your interested in pics. Geoff

then tell him he's full of it and forget bout it. Do you know where he lives? If so just show up or tell him you've got the money and then show up with nothing.

"i think" .... i read somewhere.... that the factory GT bodies were pulled from the production line late in the 70 production series, after #1000. if there were thin metal bodies, you would think they would have uesd those.
i vote for the surburban legion. ![]() doug
