Who can recommend a reliable and capable transporter other than the big fleet guys to bring a 914 from LA to St Louis?
I am familiar with Intercity and Horseless Carriage, and have used Passport Transport, but criminy, these guys are steep. ummm...please don't include your brother in law with the '85 pickup dragging the clapped out ex U-Haul trailer. Someone in between.

Brad over on 914club said he'd do that drive for $1,000.00 I think, he may have been drunk though.
Go check it out? M

Talk to a regular freight carrier like Watkins Motor Lines. If you have a friend that works for a company that ships on a regular basis you may be able to get them to do it so you get a good discount rate.

I shipped three cars with these guys (brokers for the actual carrier) and everything worked out fine; because they're brokers you may get a different carrier and have different luck, but they went 3/3 and seemed to try and only work with the folks that do well for them. My 914 was under $800 from LA to Michigan in 2000. www.ableautotransport.com

I just went through this. It's very expensive to us until you find out how much their fuel and ins costs while the driver tries to make a couple hundred a day for sitting in the cab for 10 hours on end. The driver kicks down to the broker and the broker takes $200 off the top. You'd think an independent outside of the system could make a killing just working these BBS's, but one of those guys tried to hit me for even $200 more than the big lines. If the car runs, try a driveaway.

I'd be leery of dealing with brokers. I've heard too many horror stories on the BBSes... There was a post through here a couple of months back about a guy who had a car shipped (arranged by the dealer who sold it) and the thing wound up taking two months to get to him and was really banged up along the way--probably by being loaded and unloaded about ten times... Ugh!
I don't think I'd risk it with anyone but a very very reputable company. --DD

Milt,
Interesting thing, that $200 figure just came up in an emailed quote from a broker: "Should vehicle(s) become inoperable during transport, $200.00 will be due at time of delivery in addition to any other moneys owed." So, if the battery goes dead, or a wire or cable become 'mysteriously' unconnected and the car won't start, I lay $200 on the driver. thbbbttt! These are also probably the guys that run a full open trailer load of cars crosscountry with the window open on each car. Idiots.

I'd go with a U-Haul truck & trailer if time wasn't an issue. Shoot, I'd even settle for a tow dolly. It worked great getting my 914 from CA - AZ. Of course that wasn't a concours car either, where yours might be.
My $2.00 worth (inflation included).

Got the truck, got the trailer, heck even have a dolly. But time really is the factor.
And to make things worse, I am going to be in Vegas in two weeks, but that is a fly in-fly out.

Regular van lines that are used for household moving have the service and load the car right up into the 40' trailer. I remember doing that for my parents when they moved from Mich to Fla. It ran $800. I think it was Allied Van Lines or Mayflower. They drove the car right into the trailer.
