				No Brights

I don't have brights on my car.

I have the indicator light for them and the switch moves, but when I pull back the turn signal lever, nothing happens. What could be wrong and what would it take to fix? Thanks Adam

Check the fuses first. I on occasion hit them with my foot on the way out of or into the car. Knocked the fuse for one side of the headlights off once, bought a new headlight. Installed it - still didn't work. Checked the fuses - fixed it.

Drop the fuse panel and check the wires on the corresponding terminals. These are high current lines and the crimp terminals can get loose and oxidized, even come off. Seems your relay is OK since the indicator lamp is working.

Can you hear the relay clicking as you actuate the lever? If you have the blue high-beam indicator light come on in your dash, you probably can (hear it, that is). The high beams are actuated by a small set of points in the turn signal switch that get closed when you pull the turn signal lever back. You can see them if you look in from the left side of the steering wheel in front (towards you) of the lever. Make sure these points are making contact. Sometimes they just wear out and don't make contact.

I don't hear a click of any kind when I pull back the lever. I'll check on those points and get back to you.

I would replace the relay. I had a similar problem & this fixed it. Also, check to make sure the relay is grounded. My relay had a little metal clip that grounded to the fuse panel (just by snapping in place). As soon as it was grounded, it started working again.

old style relay was self powered. new style relay requires a jumper to power the relay. I'll look up the contact numbers tonight in the manual.

Here's part of the wiring diagram for a '74.

It's not yet clear to me if the high beam indicator is working or not ("I have the indicator light for them"). If not then chase after the relay. If the indicator (K) is working then from the diagram there should be 12 v on the fuses S1,2 which feed the hi-beam filiaments. Then you've got something else wrong. Maybe the filaments are burned out or wires are off. |
