expected lifetime of stock 2.0
How long should a factory stock 2.0 (4 cyl) last? Under normal driving conditions what sort of lifetime should be expected?
100k miles? 200k? At what point will it probably need a top end rebuild? Bottom end?

IMO, with scheduled maintenance and oil changes the engine should last well over 100,000 miles before it needs rebuilding.

In my experience (I drive hard to keep up with traffic) they get tired as hell around 100k.

keep it cool and keep the valves adjusted and change the oil and you will see close to 200K

So I wonder if it really makes sense to buy an unknown but potentially tired 2.0 to replace my strong-but-overheating 1.7... In the end I could end up with a less powerful engine?

yes, it makes sense because any 2.0L is more desirable than any other stock engine and you will already have the engine to refresh after getting some use out of it. fun use out of it

That's true jamcleod... But for the price I don't know if it's worth it. I think it would be a better idea to pay $500 on a core that will need a rebuild anyway than $1000-$2000 (the going rate I think) for one that might be tired and need a rebuild anyway in a year, plus give me less power and more smoke than my 1.7 now.

Brad Roberts current car had 190K...clean as a whistle inside...I think longevity is more a question of how well its maintained and how its [NOT] abused. If they are heated up and pounded on...50K is too many miles.

Well, they aren't crisp after about 25k.

My 1.8 LJet had 325K put on it by my my uncle (1st owner, I'm the second). I decided that 325 was enough and rebuilt it. (Almost done).
