What cooling tin am I missing?
I want to buy this 1.8L motor and I told the guy that I want all of the cooling tin but it doesn't look complete to me. Are there some pieces missing?

Looks like the piece that goes across the front between the engine and firewall is not there and the rear piece that sits on top of the transmission mount flange is also missing.

Too many to list. And they are all critical.

Check here for pictures of the parts you should have:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/914/parts/engine/cylhead_sheet_metal_large.htm http://www.pelicanparts.com/914/parts/engine/engine_compartment_sheet_metal_large.htm You need all of those parts. Otherwise you will kill the engine in relatively short order. Also make sure you get the thermostat flaps that go inside the engine tin. --DD |
Are the pieces with the spark plug holes the only difference between 1.7/1.8 and 2.0 tin?
|
Yes, sort of.
There is one piece on each side of the motor that bolts to the side of the sump and to the heat exchangers. The driver's side piece is different between tail-shifter and side-shifter cars. Both are different on the 75-76 cars. Air conditioned cars have the right-side tin and possibly the front tin hacked up to fit the compressor. The rear tin piece, the vertical one, is different on the 72s for a pre-heating system that as far as I can tell was never actually hooked up on any 914s. Those are the only differences I can think of off the top of my head. --DD |
Did any of the 914's have the baffle under the barrels?

YOU MUST HAVE THE LOWER TIN IN PLACE. You will overheat the motor with out all the Cooling tin in place. Steve

Thanks Steve & Zeke. I couldn't find mine and thought I didn't have it. But I ended up finding it and now remember pulling it. The only piece of tin I do not have for sure is the tin that goes under the valve cover to the right of the oil filter (#4 in the diagram above, I think).

#4 fit's directly under the cyls, above the pushrod tubes. did you mean #5?

Yep, I did. |
#4 is the most important one, there are very few cars that still have #5 still on them. It was more of an exhaust block to disperse heat away from the cylinders at a stop.
And #4 is different for each side. I have all of them but I collected them from different cars. Of all the parts cars I have been through, none of them had all of it. |
This is from the PET 6 CD, it has the part numbers and as you can see, the numbers are different. It calls the lower ones floor ducts.
