DC/MD/VA tech session 12/6/03

i just got the OK to post about the valve adjust "tech" session we planned. it will be 10am saturday Dec 6th at the home of norustscott in sykesville, MD. all are welcome. the main emphasis will be a demo valve adjust; dezel12345, JohnB and jmuriz were interested in seeing/performing a valve adjust on their cars. there are alot of knowlegable resources in our area who hopefully will attend, so if there are any other discussion topics, such as tune up, brake adjust....

more details to follow, give a couple of days for the mapquest to be done. a cookout is planned so maybe bring some favorite food to share.

this is a cooperative effort and norustscott has been kind enough to volunteer the location (...heated garage, grill.....)

now, where is that weather site.....:D

do some sort of reply if you will be attending or tentative attending

think about caravanning up (down...)

Va914 11-04-2003 07:10 AM

I will try to make the dive up :) I will no better the closer we get to the 6th.

Please put me on the list to receive the mapquest or address for the location.

Cheers
Kerry:D

peter carroll 11-04-2003 06:19 PM

I should be able to make it. I will bring my '75, a notepad, and potato salad . Or something. Good idea, Thanks Pete

dc914guy 11-05-2003 05:35 AM

I'll be there, let me know what I should bring!

~Eric

dezel12345 11-05-2003 01:49 PM

Sounds good to me Jim......As seeing how close I live to Krispy Kreme you can only guess at what I am bringing lots of ....If the weather permits I am planning on being there. Being new to the East Coast where is Skyesville ? I am in Alexandria. Oh well . time to head out into the rain ....what happened to that Indian Summer

dc914guy 11-05-2003 02:00 PM

Scotts place is a bit of a drive from the Northern VA area, but a good part of it is on some nice fun roads :-)

I think a caravan from the Northern VA area is in order

JohnB 11-05-2003 03:28 PM

Jim,

You know I'm in, PM the directions if that's how you're handling them.

norustscott 11-05-2003 06:50 PM

This is going to be fun ... I promise.

I am really gearing up for this ... However, this week and next are really crazy. I have a tradeshow I am preparing for and will be in Denver all next week @ the OSPexpo. After that it should be smooth sailing till the first of the year.

I will put together directions on the "fun roads" up from Shady Grove road in Gaithersburg as well as the less exciting route 495 to 95N to route 32 straight to Sykesville.

For an advanced look search "Map Quest" 7455 Brandenburg (cool huh?) Circle zip code 21784.

Here is a picture of the garage ...http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1068090129.jpg

As you can see If I move the beetle out of the way we should have plenty of room for two cars ... wait I think that might be the wrong picture... yep my lift looks nothing like that one...here ya go...
[img]http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads2/garage
pic1068090255.jpg[/img]

you can see how it might be confusing? ;)

Seriously, we will have a great time and I hope you can make it.

One of my 911 buds said he might swap the plates off his 63 vette onto his race car and cruise over ... this car will be fun to check out. I will work on some other surprises as well...

Cheers, Scott

AD is just cam out today .

Enjoy

norustscott 11-06-2003 01:28 PM

Hey, does Klaus answer the phone?

jamcleod 11-07-2003 05:12 AM

is that Klaus Nickel aka "Computer Fritz"? if it is, he supposedly has a 914/VW boneyard in the Columbia MDarea.

norustscott 11-07-2003 05:39 AM

He runs an ad every so often ... I have been to the yard ... it is amazing. There are some (vw) treasures buried there. He has no idea of what is there. Now is a great time to dig there. no wasps poison ivy etc.

Can anyone confirm it is him? I understood a year ago that the county came down hard on him to stop running a salvage business from his home, actually Dad's home. Very interesting guy. German naval wwII vet and is still very lucid...Sat through a couple of good war stories waiting for Kluas one day...

Va914 11-07-2003 07:59 AM

Nope that is not him...I didn't know you guys new about him. I bought some parts off him 2 years ago. He must have 15 914's 5 911/912's rusting away.

The guys selling the parts has them at his moms garage in MD. I haven't seen the add but from talking to him he has deck lids, bumpers..NO interior and a 1.7 engine in pieces.

He was into 914's long ago and now drives a 911, took awhile for him to admit it...Don't blame him :)

I told him I was going to be up in the area next weekend and he sounded like he would love to see some 914's again and wanted to stop by. He said I could have everything for $200.

I wish I knew what was there?????

Silverside 11-10-2003 03:29 AM

Count me in! I am a little new to this stuff so it would be nice to talk to a few guys in the area.

Geoff C.

Need directions though. Non-fun roads if you don't mind. The teener has no wheels, seats, or engine. I could try and push.

jamcleod 11-10-2003 05:36 AM

go to:

http://www.mapquest.com/directions/

& put in scotts address he listed in the reply with the pix of his car on the lift (in front of the yellow/red BOSCH banner)

i/we will try to respond to all requests for directions so no one gets left out. let me/us know if you are without directions.

ps: silverside: i have 2 seats and could put old michelin xzx's on vw rims but can't get an engine together in time.

Who is in... I have new neighbors to impress lol....

JohnB 11-24-2003 02:03 PM

I'm in and if I can bring my 11 yr old that'll be two of us. She's not much good with a wrench but she's a real good complainer.

She'll make someone a perfect wife some day....

norustscott 11-24-2003 05:08 PM

JB,

I have a 10 and 8 year old daughter to keep her company ... Plenty of little girl stuff to keep her occupied!

Rog914 11-24-2003 07:05 PM

I plan on coming with my 914 if there's no snow, rain or salt on the road.

Ralph

74 2.0

norustscott 11-24-2003 07:14 PM

Snow, that's a good point, it was sleeting pretty good here a few hours ago...We also need a car to work on...Valve adjust. Dwell and timing and of course the general " whats this noise sound like to you?

So put your list together and we will use the collective knowledge to solve or at least diagnose your problem...

jamcleod 11-25-2003 04:42 AM

didn't JohnB, JmuRiz and dezel12345 want to see valve adjusts? maybe dezel12345 will have sold his 914/4 and bought that 916;)
i can't help with a valve adjust on a -6

JohnB 11-25-2003 06:18 AM

Yeah, I like the valve adjust idea if it's feasible but I'm also interested in checking out my cooling flaps if the wx permits driving the car up. I also want to find the source of a very slow oil leak around the filler neck. But those are just my ideas, I'm open to suggestion.

The 11 yr old will be a last minute decision but thanks very much for the offer.

peter carroll 11-25-2003 05:25 PM

Count me in. I hope to bring my'75. Runs badly when cold. Not too bad when warm. What can I bring? Pete in Hereford, Md.

JmuRiz 11-25-2003 06:31 PM

Oh yeah, I'll be there. Any word on what time, or if the people from NoVA are meeting up to drive there. It's a hike, but it should be fun. Hopefully I'll get crackin on some of my projects this long-weekend SmileWavy

jamcleod 11-26-2003 04:27 AM

i won't be able to caravan since i have that appt. my mapquest directions take me up I95, not my favorite route but... anyone know of a route via I270-Rockville-back roads-Sykesville or is I95-Rt32 the best?

JohnB 11-26-2003 04:51 AM

Nate, I can try to caravan with you since I have to pass Sterling on my way. What time/where? Starbuck's on Rt 7 at Dranesville Rd? Time?

jr

dc914guy 11-26-2003 08:29 AM

Count me in! Just let me know what I can bring, otherwise I will default to a 12 pack and some BBQ Chicken :D

~Eric

norustscott 11-26-2003 12:03 PM

NOT! for sale ... Eric is starting a collection!

let's see ... role call:

Jim
John
Eric
Nathan
Peter
Ralph
? Dave
Geoff
Kerry
? Dezel 1234567891011121314151617...:)?

Looks like a strong possibility of ten? very cool. I am palnning on providing the Burgers , Dogs & chips. Consider it a holiday greeting card you can eat. Anything else is up to you guys. BYOBeverage????

We have two bays to work with and with any luck we may have 70 degree weather and can use the driveway as well.

Like I siad before start putting those triage lists together and we can hit those after a valve adjust or two.

JmuRiz 12-01-2003 06:47 AM

John B and/or Eric/anyone else,

What time do you all want to meet at Starbuck's on Rt 7 at Dranesville Rd? I don't know when we are meeting up at Scott's. I think it takes 1.5 hours from that spot. I'm open for suggestions, but that location would be GREAT for me.

Nathan

jamcleod 12-01-2003 06:51 AM

shooting for a start time of 10am. i have my eye on the weather and we may need to have a rain date if weather will keep people from attending.

JohnB 12-01-2003 08:09 AM

Nate,

If Jim says we're starting at 10:00 let's make it an 8:30 launch from the Starbuck's. I'm in Ashburn so going past there is not a problem for me.

My company Christmas party is Sat night in Annapolis so I have to come back to NoVa, retrieve the wife and head back east in the afternoon so I'm not sure how long we'll stay. Further complication: wife has the flu and I don't have any symptoms. Yet...

PM me and we'll swap phone numbers if you like.

dc914guy 12-01-2003 09:41 AM

I am in for the caravan, but I will be heading to Baltimore to see a friend afterwards so I will be driving my wonderful rental truck.

Scott... I can't bring myself to sell it.

norustscott 12-01-2003 09:41 AM

We can always reschedule if required...weather, turnout, holiday party stuff....

Has any one heard from Dezel recently. We have still not picked a car to adjust valves....we can do more than one too!
