Street Race in Tijuana in November!!!
Yes it is true the Mexican Sports Car federation is holding a street race in Tijuana on November 7, 8 and 9. It will be just south of the border in the "river zone" or "zona Rio" depending on who you ask. The last one several years ago was a blast and a Winston Cup car battled a twin turbo GT1 class Porsche 911 for the whole unlimited race which the 911 finally won. We plan to race the 914 and my buddy Ted is racing his 356, so come on down and cheer us on!!!

Maybe its just me but I feel like I am in a car race everytime I am in Tijuana. Green light six cars wide merging into one lane to hit the correct turn off to get on highway 1.
Good luck John sounds like fun! |

John,
Is this along the lines of a semi-organized 'vintage' race, or a runwhatyabrung deal? I have heard that Mexican road racing, particularly near the border, is no worse than the usual NASA race weekend, just a little weak on some of the spectator safety matters.

Well from what I have seen it ends up being like a NASA or run-what-you-brung type of event. There is a class for spec Golfs/GTIs that are raced in Mexico and then they go by engine size, tires, and how fast the car is in timed sessions. In Mexicali one class had 911s, Formula Rhinos, turbo Mitsubishis, Hondas and a very interesting Mercur.
They also seem to like standing starts which is what they used in Mexicali! At the last TJ race, the problems seems to be caused by the Americans with overpowered 930s that ran in to each other on the pace lap!!?? If nothing else you'll get to sign tons of autographs, meet beautiful TV and movie starlets and the Tecate Girls! |

Hmmmm - This could be the place to blow another engine in "Yellow Rusty". Do they have a class for 14s that shed parts?
Do I have to wear a firesuit and helmet? Verrrrrrrry interesting - a legalized BAJA 3.5.25 ![]()

They have cars that shed parts the whole race!!!!! You need a fuel cell, fire bottle (not a system), roll cage, fire suit, SA rated helmet, etc. It should be a blast!

The Terrible Herbst gas station owner is an avid baja racer....the big "thing" the locals to do there is reach out and touch the cars as they go by.....one race Herbst swerved to avoid one touchyfeeley while another came from the otherside.....he smacked the second and crashed....the crowd yanked him out of the car ready to string him up.
He was "rescued" by the local cops who beat the crap outta him cause the victim was a relative......ended up in the hopsital with injuries not consistent with an auto accident. I think I'll stay here and read about it......
