upgrading a 1.7 to 2.0 cheap
anyone know how to upgrade a 1.7 to accel as fast as a 2.0 or faster? without having to rebuild the engine? filters, cold air intake, high perfomance sparkplugs and plugwires, electronic ignition for the sparkplugs?

Nope.
A set of tuned headers will get you close. http://www.tangerineracing.com is the best, and should get you the closest to the stock 2.0's 95 HP. The other stuff can get you a bit, but in general just a tiny bit... But I doubt that, even with all of that, you'll quite get to 95 HP. Note that the headers that work aren't cheap. And usually, the headers that are cheap don't work... --DD |

I don't think headers will get you much on a 1.7. Porsche did not leave any HP on the table with the Early 1.7. And exhaust change may help some.
Learn to drive the car. The Gentleman with some of the lowest autocross times on the local track, is driving a 1.7 in stock condition. He just knows how to drive that thang. And actually, I would check the tune of everything on the car. Is the throttle coming fully open when the pedal is pressed fully to the floor? What are the condition of the plugs and points? When was the last time the valves were adjusted? If the car is not in tip top condition, you will not be getting even close to the maximum HP. |
Shorty, why not build yourself a 2.0L? The torque will be minimal at best with addons. You may even lose useable low-end torque!

I have built 1.7 that run quick and fast. 1700 domed pistons bump up the comp to 9to1 , Change cam to Norris 294 X,050 Dizzy,36 Dels. Set timing to 32 btdc.Balance motor, Bursch Muffler. this will give you a nice boost in power. Otto

Definitely a good power boost! But it's not exactly cheap, and slightly more involved modifications than simple bolt-ons...
