Flares and 17'' wheels?

Not that I'm thinking of doing this anytime soon, but how do people put "Turbo twist" wheels or the like onto their cars? I've got the standard 'ol fibergalss deals on mine, and with my 7inch cookies, there's just enough room (less that 1/2 inch maybe) before they rub on the inside lip of the flare . On the rear, I have a 3/8 spacer, and I can't run any spacers on the front, or the tire will rub ever so slightly on the lower inside front lip when I turn(Could I have put my front flares on the wrong sides ). When look at my car from the front or the rear, it looks goofy because the wheels don't fill the space in the fenderwell anymore. Do they file down the inside edges to allow for the wider wheels/spacers? And if so, how stinkin' big are these spacers?

How he do dat, and is it safe?

First, there is no "standard fiberglass flare". They all require "tweaking" to fit, and every installation is a little different. He may have more room than you do, by a significant margin.

Second, later 911 wheels have different offsets or backspacing than early ones. Check the measurements sometime... They sit a lot further into the wheel well than the early wheels.

Different wheels have different offsets,
I am running 16 x 7 phone dials on the front with 225 50's with a 1 inch spacer
and 16 x 8 phone dials with 245 45's in the rear with a 1/4 inch spacer. the fronts have plenty of room as do the rears. So much so the rear tires dont look
wide enough I have 1 1/2 inches to spare and would like to fit a 275 back there somehow. Check this thread.

widest rear tire for flare

Hmm, after seeing some close-ups of other's setups (thanks iamchappy) it looks like I could actually zip a little off the inside lip of my flares. I didn't even think about doing that, because I figured it would make the panel a lot weaker.
I do remember futzing around a lot getting everything to line up - I put all the flares, rockers and spoilers on first to line everything up before putting them on - it was a pain in the arse. I'd do it again though!
I'd need some mega-wide wheels to fill that space, and a few more squirrels under the hood to get them around! They do look cool, though - maybe next year, after I become independantly wealthy somehow.
Hey Chappy, do you have any shots of your car from the front and rear, showing the spacing? I remember that thread now, and I like how you're doing the filler door also. Toooo many ideas at once, I'm suffering overload.......

Not only are the actual flares different, you can change everything by pulling the fenders out before you attach the flares. I have seen huge wheels on a car with that done.

Ride height has alot to do with the front turning clearance also, eh?

Geez, yeah you're right too Miles, I forgot about that. I had a set of 1/4 inch spacers on my fronts, and checked the clearances - everything was fine, until I took the car down from the stands, and tried turning out of the driveway. My car sits REALLY low, sooo - back up in the air, out with the spacers. I'm gonna file away some of the offensive fiberglass, and try it again

I like the look of the tire coming all the way to the edge... within reason, but I like the feel of a car that sits a little lower.

I believe the suggested rear height is (new can of worms.. including varied flare insallations) 1 3/4" lip to wheel lip, and the front should be around 1/2 below that.

YMMV, AFAIK, IDOHYFAI, and all that..

I also kind of like the helmet effect of having the thing slammed with flares... so there!
