A.A.R. question

I just bought a clean 1973 1.7. It has a high idle. I've timed and adjusted the valves. Now it idles at about 1800 rpm, the idle adjustment screw won't take it any lower. I took out the A.A.R. cleaned it and bench tested it. The lower part does get warm and the valve does close but I can still blow a bit of air through it, is this normal? Even after it is warmed up it still stays at the same idle. I did put my finger over the oulet on the A.A.R. so no air goes through it and the idle does come down. Can anyone give me any insight of what corrections I can make? Thanks! It sure is a fun car to drive though, I wish I had one of these years ago.:D

Spray in some PB Blaster to loosen up the rotating part inside. It should close off completely to block any free air.

I put a ball bearing in the hose - solved the problem. It was real hard to keep my finger in hose while driving:D

No, it just disabled the AAR completely. You can get the same effect by removing the AAR and then capping off the two hose fittings that used to go to it.

I would suggest removing the AAR, blocking the lines, and seeing if it idles your car down enough. I'm betting that you have some vacuum leaks somewhere else as well, and that helps to cause the high idle. The AAR might be part of the problem, but it's good to check for other leaks as well.

Good luck,
