fuel gauge

My fuel gauge for years has read about 3/4+ when full and that didn't bother me, now after my last couple of fill-ups it registers less than 1/2. Any ideas on whats going on? The low fuel light still works. I recently installed a new fuel pump and replaced the filter under the tank. Please tell me the name of the engineer who decided to place the fuel filter behind the pump, brilliant.

The engineer that did that was likely whoever converted the car to carbs...

The sender is likely the culprit. Take it out and clean it, make sure the wires are OK and that the float rides up and down on them.

Also clean up your fuses. They may not be the culprit, but they're a whole lot easier (and cleaner!) to mess with than the fuel level sender.
