Restoring a 914, which are the hardest parts to get?
 
Saw a post on the grilles and am worried some of the parts I thought would be easy to get will be hard. Would like to know what to expect. Car is 1970 914-6 undergoing restoration.

I have the no fog light grilles. Car is not here so I can't check if metal or plastic. They do have a greenish tint. I want to change over to fog lights with round grille openings and you guys are scaring me.

How hard are these to get? What hardware do I need to convert over to fogs, obviously grille and light but what about brackets? Are they available new? What source for used?

As long as I'm at it what about all red taillamp lenses? I heard they're not available new. Mine has Euro amber / red and I like them but want to go original.

Which are the hardest parts to get? I'll start looking now.

i got my fog's off ebay. ~60 bucks.
came with brackets, etc.
Grilles are avialable new at most places for 200 a pair (chromed)

some parts arent being made anynmore but on ebay there is a lot of "NOS" (new old stock) parts. just keep your eyes open. AA has lots of NOS products but, everone knows AA sucks :)

Many parts are NLA. The only part that is NLA and not restorable, without some replacement available...

is the fuse cover.

Pete...I'm also restoring a 914 and between Ebay, Pelican, people in here (check out the classifieds) and the dealer I'm finding everything...don't worry about parts you'll find them easy enough. Have fun!

It's a broken browned-out clear colored piece of plastic, hard to tell what it's supposed to be shaped like, it's missing pieces..

I have owned 2-3 in mostly whole condition, maybe one that was even niceish.

Now I understand why Ray (my mechanic) handed it to me and said cherish this they are no longer available. My fuse cover is in good condition, just a coupe of minor cracks.

Great to know most of the parts are going to be available.

I had the wheelwells cleaned today and they look like new. Porsche must use some pretty tough paint in those areas. I will post some pictures soon.

The US-spec (red/white) taillamp lenses are the most obvious one. The Six (and early Four) rear bumper is less obvious, but you can still tell from the outside.

Stuff like the steering column and switchgear are, I think, NLA and may be hard to come by.

The footrest, in some colors, is absurdly hard to find. (Hint--if you have a brown one, keep it in a safe!!)

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the wiring harnesses that are Six-specific are also tough to find, though last I checked Pelican did have one or two full-body 914-6 harnesses.

Remember, they made less than 3500 Sixes. Six-specific parts (that people don't use to convert four-cylinder cars) have a good chance of being rare.

Sunvisors are the hardest to find NOS. Mittlemotor is trying to get a new run made in a few months so maybe there's hope yet.
A VW bug fuse cover fits just fine and its $7.50 but you can't use the little guides on the cover to tell you want the fuse is for.

Try to find a Porsche Targa top rear seal!
