windshield seals

I'm confused. I've seen alot of places advertising to sell the windshield seals. Some it looks like are the windshield frame seals and some are just the little molding things. I need like the actual rubber that goes between the windshield and the frame. Does anyone know where to buy this stuff and how do I know for sure what is a frame seal and what is a windshield seal?

As far as I know there is no windshield seal. Most people go to thier local auto glass place and buy a roll of Butyl tape. I installed it on the car first then put the glass in. It worked great. There is a piece of rubber that goes along the bottom of the windshield Pelican P/N B-552-263-10, thats the only windshield seal I know of. It seals between the windshield and the dash. Some teeners have used the same Butyl but in a chalk form, I like the tape less mess.

well I know I cut some kinda seal out. It seemed to have a top and a bottom and the part on the outside was a wider piece of rubber that covered the glas and the body a little bit. It didn't seem to be any kind of tape, but it did seem to have alot of windshield sealer on it.

Sounds like someone put that on instead of the chrome trim that went around the windshield at the factory.

Just about any generic windshield seal should work, as long as it will make the bends in the corners. I think auto body supply places will have a selection; go take a look there.

It actually is not a tape, but is a 3/8 x3/8 square roll of butyl. It is just rolled like a roll of tape. Like this:

so if I were to take it to a auto glass place they could put it in for me or at least give me the right stuff to put it in? I know getting the thing out was sure hard....hopefully putting it back in won't be. I ended up getting some weedeater string and it would get hot enough to cut the rubber while not falling apart like everythign else I tried. I ended up burning the skin off my nuckles from it too, but I got the windshield out finally. Boy I'm sure glad I asked you guys though, i was for sure that there was a seal I was gonna have to buy and I thought it came in two pieces for some reason. I was thinkin that I was gonna have to spend like $200. Thanks for setting me straight though.

The picture I posted was for reference. The tape I got was almast square. As far as removal, a guitar string works great...especially a woung G string...

hahaha, ya that probably woulda worked too. I tried a piece of picture frame hanger wire, but that broke really easily and then I tried a piece of mig wire and that didn't cut anything.

An auto glass place should have access to butyl tape (use the 1/4" stuff, the 3/8" stuff will make the WS sit too far out of the frame) and also to the generic rubber trim stuff.

They can also use a eurethane glue to glue the WS in. Newer cars either use that or are mechanically held in place by the rubber trim. I'm not sold on the eurethane stuff...

ya I think mine had the generic seal and the urethane before. It was sure a mess when I took it out.

That's right, it's held in with plain ol' butyl tape. Taking the backpad and the padding around the window is a bit of a pain, though.

Hehe. I gots no more of that stuff in there. I kinda figured that the padding and whatnot up against the rear glass helped secure it. Right now I have 1/8" polycarbonate in there, but the rule books say min 1/4". Hell, I'll put the glass back in. Cheaper and lighter. I'm sure I'll need some clips to hold it here and there.

Getting back to the subject here, I glued my windshield in with the black butyl that I bought from the auto glass shop. I put a nice even bead about the size of a pencil as straight as I could do it around the opening and dropped the glass in and pushed it down gently but firmly and left it to dry in the sun. By the time I reinstalled the moulding, you couldn't tell what had been used. I bet it doesn't come out w/o breaking it. Too bad. It's an original factory glass.

I'm pretty amazed my windshield didn't break when I was pullin it cause I was really reefin on it.

I would recommend the " tape" over the caulk. Unless you want to get very pssssd, line the windshield up very carefully and know that you only get one shot. I believe the directions say it can be water tested immediately. Good Luck! PETE

I know that the last post was 4/27/03. I just recently pulled my windsheild off to redo the dash padding on 914. I understand what everyone is saying about resealing the windshield. There is a seal on the outside bottom of the windshield that has metal clips inside the seal itself that clips onto the outside frame. I asked a Porsche dealer about it and they said it was about $100. I just have 3 questions to ask:

1) Do I have to get that seal or can I just use any seal?

2) What is the proper temperature to install a windshield in?

3) How long is the cure time once it is installed?

The only seal is along the bottom of the window on the inside. The windshield is held in by buyl tape "goop". You can get it at auto glass shops or auto body shops. Some people like to use urethane but I think the butyl has more "give" and is less prone to breaking th windshield when th chassis flexes.

Get the 1/4" wide tape.
