Connections to new coil
Hey fellas:
I'm trying to replace my old coil with a brand new one (Bosch Blue). I'm pretty sure the old one is the original coil. What is the corret way to wiring up the new coil? Besides the thin green and black(?) wires, I have a group of wires that are "wrapped" with a black spirally cover going to both + and - terminals also. The wires from the wrapped bunch run through a rectangular piece (plastic?) right at the coil and then to screws. On this rectagular piece are the 2 spades for the thinner wires to connect. My new coil only has a 3 spaded terminal on both sides (no new rectangular piece). Will I need to re-use this old rectagular piece again in order to make the connections properly or can I just wrap the wires from the wrapped bunch around the terminals of the new coil? I am confused (as usual) Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Andy....

Someone has been working on your wiring. The spiral-wound plastic "split loom" stuff is not original, nor are the connectors.
The original coil had connections just like the blue one does. The only external difference is that the blue coil has a smaller OD than the original one. I used a wrap of bicycle inner tube to get the blue coil to fit the original bracket. There should be three wires going to the coil, unless extra stuff has been added on. A thicker black (or black/red--black with red stripe) wire, a thin black/purple wire, and a thin green wire. This is in addition to the really fat wire from the middle of the coil to the distributor cap. Anyway, the thin green wire from the points goes to the (-) terminal, as does the black/purple wire that runs the tach. The thicker black wire (or black/red) carries power to the coil when the key is "on", and connects to the (+) terminal. Aftermarket ignition setups often have one connection to (-) and one to (+). Some carb installers run the fuel pump from the (+). I think this is a bad idea, and that the pump should run off of its own circuit, preferably one isolated by a relay. --DD

Dave:
I think you'r right. There was an alarm system that I'm tearing out that this extra junk might be for. I'll trace it further tonight and double check. Thanks for the info. Andy...
