914 update to 911 mirrors???

I have seen some 914s updated with I believe 911 newer style mirrors painted body color. Is this correct? Has anyone done this? I have seen many electric mirrors for sale. Are there any 911 manual mirors of this type? Do you have to modify the base at all? I am going for a more modern look on my 914 v8 and that wimpy chrome mirror just doesn't fit the look.
thanks
Mark

I've seen many 914's with the updated "square" painted mirrors you see on the 911's from 74 through the early 90's. I just got a pair off of ebay for 60 bucks (electric)..although I'm going to take the electronics out. The bases will match the curve of the 914 door but they mount on the curve part not the top flat part. There is a metal backing plate that must be used on the 914 doors for added strength although you'll see it missing from some 911's (cheap part anyhow). My car is in the body shop now so I won't have pics for several months. But they fit and look cool (I like the square versus the more current rounded ones as they match the "squareness" of the 914 body style).

Here are the mirrors i used. Worked fine and the look was similar to those 911 flag-styled. Only thing is that they arent 911s.... they are..... Ford Escort!!!!! 5$ a piece with electric components!

Check out Mazda Miata mirrors (late model). They have the same basic shape as the late C2 911 mirrors, but are a little bit smaller. I think they are in better scale to the 914. The late 911 mirrors always looked a little on the large side for a 914 (IMHO). I picked up a set of electric Miata mirrors for 60 bucks on evil-bay. They also fit the door contour perfectly, where the 911 mirrors don't quite fit right from what I understand?

farleyd,

How did you mount your Escort mirrors? Were you able to use the stock mounting points?

Hi Gary, nope. They attach a little lower on the door. Pretty simple to figure out once the door panels are out. I used the base gaskets on the Escort mirrors. But the sitting angle is a bit different. So youll have to be creative. Either you shim the outside door panel with Bondo OR you grind the plastic mirror housings.

Good luck!

"NARP" is one of those catch-phrases that we sometimes use to make fun of them. (Kinda like "You can't turbo a 914!") Everybody knows that the 914 isn't a "Real Porsche", right? Well, at least the stuck-up 911 owners with more gold chains than brains know it... And try to tell us that...

i dont get how people can say that a car isint a (real) car so if ford makes a less desired car its not a ford? if any car (isint) a porsche its the cayenne but i see its still one since porsche made it (dont ask why)
most 911 owners i know love the 914 the only one that dont are the rich snobs that know nothing about the car or company ... they just want to look cool

for instance i met a guy at a stop light and he was in a guards red 911 well at the time i wasnt sure if it was(lighting) i asked if it was guards red and he gave me a weird look and said uhh i dont know and sped off (*******)
