Cat required on a '76 914?

Did my '76 914 come with a cat?
Anyone know for sure?
It doesn't have one now, but maybe a PO took it off.
I'm trying to decide if I should put one on before I go in for an emissions test. I'm not to that point yet, but I'm trying to think ahead.
Thanks!
Andy...

Can you find the emissions equipment sticker in the engine bay? It is probably of the left side wall. It should say something about what equipment was delivered on the car.

If it's a CA-spec car, it should have a cat.

Great, I'll check for it Thanks Dave.
What about this air pump?
My car has an air pump pulley, but now pump.
Is this an emissions part?

Yup. I can never remember which cars had the pump and which the cat, and I'm not sure any had both. Frankly, I haven't paid that much attention to the later smog equipment. I looked into it and decided I didn't like any of it, so I haven't spent much effort thinking about any of it because I was not going to own a 75-76 car with it.

Best thing to do, though, is check with your local smog people to see what you, as a current resident of your current state, are supposed to have. Heck, you may not even need fuel injection on a car that old in WI. (Not sure, never dealt with their smog laws.)

If it came with a Cat there should be a big yellow "CATALYST" sticker on the drivers door jamb.

Your instrument panel will have an egr light between the guages.

Your speedo cable will be two piece - one long from the tranny to the egr counter underneath the foam footrest on the pass side and a short one from the egr counter to the speedo.

etc etc etc

If you need an assembly w/ cat I know someone who may have it (if he hasn't thrown it away).

Miles Julihns 76 car was a 49 state car...later imported to CA. It had an air pump but no cat. He later needed to put a cat on it so it would pass CA emissions testing.

I think I'll just put a cat on, skip the air pump and see if I pass.
I only need to pass once because I will get collectors plates for it and then it will be exempt after that.
Thanks fellas!

Actually, if the thing is in proper tune, it might not need a cat to pass inspection.

My '76 has no cat, never did, and that's a good thing. The extra loop-arounds necessary to add a cat create a lot of backpressure and rob a good bit of power.

I checked my car last night and it does has stickers in the engine compartment and on the driver's side door. I'll put a cat on for the inspection and who knows what it'll happen afterwards.
Thanks for all the input guys!
Andy...

Get the specs needed to pass first.....then run it so that it's good and warm. Get a pretest at a wrench that has a good analyzer. Adjust as neccessary and then go to the State run facility for the official test.
