Window Woes

My drivers side window is very loose, you can
grab the top of it when the door is open and
move it laterly quite a bit. I have had the
panel off the door but I don't know what to look for, I get the creeps thinking I might have try to shoehorn my arms in there and
turn some bolts. What are some causes of this
malady ?.

Hi Neal-
What year is your car? If it is a pre-1973 here are some places to start:
On the bottom of the door there are two adjusting points. There is a screw toward the side of the door that opens and a slotted screw/nut combination at the hinge side of the door. These adjust the angle of the window toward the body of the car. They are easy to adjust (lots of opening and closing the door...) but if either adjustment was to become very loose (or fall out) the window will move alot.

If the glass has slop front to rear, remove the door panel and check the nut that secure the top of the slider mechanism. These are located at the top of the door, close to the center. Also check the screws that hold the wind wing window support, as this is also the front channel for the window.

Check the bolts that hold the glass to the slider, and , lastly, check the end cap on the opening end of the door rubber. This supports the rear slider channel with a HORRIBLY hidden screw.

The good news is that all of this is accessible by only removing the door panel. The first check I listed above doesn't require the removal of anything. Remeber to check all of your window rubber (especially the felt strips)
Good Luck-
Scott S

There is a small screw located near the top of the door end (latch side) that holds the rubber end cap in place to which the outside rubber squeegee butts. As I recall, this screw also fastens into the vertical window channel (the one with the felt in it). If this screw is missing or not catching the window channel, you will get the symptoms you describe.
