Stuck Lifter

My two liter rebuild went pretty smoothly, but I have had two issues after installing and driving the motor. The first was a loud knocking noise fromt he passenger side of the motor and the second was a loss of oil pressure after the engine warmed up. I have now removed the motor and taken the heads and cylinders off to find that the intake lifter on the #3 piston will not come out of its bore. I am betting that this is the source of my knock, but am wondering if it might also be contributing to my loss of oil pressure... any thoughts?

Bad lifter= flattening cam= severe amounts of foreign debris from the extreme wear.

As the parts wear all the debris goes through the oil pump and bearings- double check everything before it goes back together, especially the pump.

This all equals out to the fact that you have just become a statistic.

Take it apart- start all over . Guaranteed. No way out of it.

The lifter has mushroomed and the head will not come through the bore now.

Another one bites the dust.

what lifters did you use?

Thanks Jake for the quick response, I will check on the lifter brand as it was quite some time ago when I bought the parts. The motor has less than 30 mins of run time on it.. and the lifter and pushrod were new and the cam was reground... the other side had no trouble. What you say makes good sense though.. oh well that is why its a project car, not yet a daily driver..

Jake,

I did not do anything to break in the cam. This was not mentioned in any of my reference material, I would appreciate any guidance you could give me on this, before the motor goes back together...

Running the engine with no load for 20 minutes at 2000-2500 RPM is the "traditional" cam break-in. Usually done by propping the throttle valve open a little ways (not with anything that could fall in!!) and just letting it go.

I think I remember Jake using a slightly different procedure--different time and RPM, possibly?

Please tell us what kind of lifters you used.

PS - Jake, what would be a good time for me to call you directly?

Gosh, I hate this. I was thinking of going out to the shop and gluing together my cases. Euro 2056 w/ WEB 107i cam and lifters and matched ports. How many more people are not doing thier engins because of lifter paranoia?

I bought the lifters in 1991 from Engine Builder's Supply (they also did the cam grind, and JE forged Pistons). I found the receipt but it does not list the brand nor do I have the box. I am sorry to not be able to give more info than this... I still have not had time to crack the case open, but should manage that this weekend.
