Got a new (well, used, of course) inner door handle to replace my broken drivers side one. Door panel is off and I start looking at the (used-to-be) fuzzy horizontal strips along the window. New ones are only $11.00 for the "inner" one, but $43 for the "outer"fuzzy strip. Has anyone ever tried an alternative for the outer fuzzies? The part is entirely hidden from view. Apparently it is a fiber piece with a fuzzy portion, all glued together and screwed into a slot. I would like to think a clever alternative one has been developed. Any suggestions? Experiences? Speculations? And now I'm gonna have to figure out why there is no spring assist to raise my window. And when I'm throuh with the driver's side, I'll have to do the passenger side. Its always something...

I can't guarantee this will work but you might give it a shot:
I replaced a lot of my rubber trim by going to my local wrecking yard & picking up various trim pieces from other cars - Audi had many pieces that were similar & I simply cut to fit my 914. I was able to to the rear trunk, door pieces etc... I would think that the fuzzy strips that you are referring to could be done the same way. The nice thing about this method was that I found near perfect trim pieces from newer model Audi's & 944's and I only spent a few bucks. Hope this helps.....................Vern |

I just replaced mine at $43. I could not find anything else to work.
Its flat item with three holes. You have to slide/stuff it into the channel. Its tuff stuff. While you at it look at your U shaped channels that guide the window on each side. Those arent cheap either..sob...sob..Oh the humanity! -Rich |

Well, I started looking and decided it was just gonna big too much trouble getting 'em in, as well as the $43 ea (that isn't that much, but I could spend $86 on other pretty much unseen and minimally needed items that might give more pleasure). In fact, spending 86 bucks on just about anything other than the 914 is more acceptable (i can hear it now- "another car part order?"). So, I bought these 3-M adhesive backed felt furniture pads. I cut a strip the size of the fuzz-less area of the inner fuzzy strip, pulled the window back enoth to sqeeze it into place,, and voila- no more rattling window when I close the door! I really think this will work because the sticky back is so strongly adhesive. I'm pretty sure a stick-on type made 25 years age would not stay stuck very long, but this stuff....
So, unlless you are super-purist about it, I think one should consider this approach. It protects the glass like the fuzzy strip, it can't be seen, and it only cost about $3.00 ( and I still have enough left for a piece of furniture too). |
