Pertronix Ignition

After going through the postings in regards to ignition systems, I thought I would get rid of the points and install a Pertronix. To make it clear what part I needed I contacted Pertronix in California and spoke with a man who assured me that their parts would work just fine. He also gave me the name of a Canadian dealer for Pertronix.I contacted the dealer and they said they had the parts in stock for $120.00 CDN. I got one of those "better check again" feelings and contacted Pertronix and talked this time to a lady, she asked for the the distributer #s. I explained that I had a 1974 2.0 with stock F.I.and gave her the VW and Bosche part numbers off of the distributor. After a long delay she came back and told me that none of their ignition parts would work in that particular distributor. Does anyone have any experience useing the Pertronix in the 2.0 F.I. motor? It is not particularily inexpensive and I want to be sure before buying the part.
Thanks in advance for any help

If you've decided on the pertronix, the model you want is 1847V.. it's the one for the stock 2.0..
you might consider the crane ignition though. If you've read the past posts on ignition conversions, you know why i stay away from pertrnoix.

just my 0.02

There is a difference between just getting rid of the points and boosting up to a better electronic ignition. It will make your life a lot easier to get rid of the points, but maybe you should consider an even bigger upgrade. I have the pertronix points on one of my 914s, and an Allison high voltage electronic pointless ignition on the other-the difference is noticible. I get better gas mileage, faster cold starts, and better performance from the allison, which cost a little over twice as much. Just something to think about.

About the Pertronix Ignitor. I have been using the Ignitor for about 8 months now. The difference in starting and smoothness is noticable when compared to the points. I had a problem with the Ignitor (it was my fault, not the product) and Pertronix replaced it without question.

I'm not sure about exchange rates between USA and Canada, but I only paid about $55 for mine. I ordered mine through a magazine sales ad. I have a '74 2.0L with FI and despite the sales lady's knowledge, they do have an ignitor for your application.

Good luck.

Prior to installing the Pertronix Ignitor in my own 2.0L, I installed one in a friend's '73 FI 2.0L (same application as yours), and the change was like night & day.

It settled right down to its warm-up idle, timed right up to spec, and ran smooth throughout its rev range. He used to get this annoying, intermittent, low-level popping near redline whenever he romped on it, which totally disappeared upon conversion (Point float? Worn distributor cam?).

I recommend it as a low-cost upgrade to a relatively stock FI or carbed 914. It, along with a Bosch Blue Coil, will "spark" your interests as well (God; I could've avoided that pun).
