V8 conversion alternators
Those of you with Chevy conversions - what alternators are you running with or what do you recommend (model & year GM)? I've got an extra 55 amp (spare unit for my '68 Chevelle) that fits my brackets beautifully. But with all my accessories (dual fans, electric water/fuel pumps, stereo) I don't think it's going to cut it. It's not intuitively obvious if I can wire the stock 914 regulator to work with it either - there's some differences in the GM and 914 designs.
I haven't found much info out on the web on this. Are you using high output, one-wire alternators (built-in reg) and clipping the wires to the old regulator? Are you wiring the original dash warning light plus running a separate #10 ga. wire between battery and alternator? Using a high amp. alt. with old wiring looks like a fire hazard, especially after a jump start on a dead battery. Maybe a fusible link in there? Appreciate your help! |

Guy
I ran a internal regulated 55 amp GM alternator with a electric water pump and fans. I wired this using the stock light in the 914 combo gauge and it works great. The 914 wire goes to the switched lite ckt. and the 915 goes to the battery. If I remember correct I used a #8 wire to the battery for the higher load. ![]() Last edited by Bob Bischoff; 02-27-2004 at 05:22 AM.. |

Bob, do you recall a common year and model car/truck that used this alternator? The typical people at FLAPS generally give you a blank stare if you ask for something they can't punch up into the computer. Also, does this one have the mounting bracket holes diagonally opposite each other? That's what I need for a direct swap. Thanks much.

Don't know the year or anything. I got this from a freind that has a starter, altenator shop. I did have him install a smaller pulley to run the Alt. at a higher speed. I'm using a serpintine belt system and there is a good range of pulleys to chose from. I think all V8 gm alt. are the same physical size until the change in 96 or so.
What kind of water pump are you going to use?? Bob Last edited by Bob Bischoff; 02-27-2004 at 06:28 AM.. |

I have a Dedenbear WP-3 remote pump, and also using their water header and expansion tank kit. I'm running the pump off the old heater blower motor wiring, its relay coil jumpered over to switch on with the fuel pump. Cooling system about ready to go, I even modified the old VDO oil temp sender to fit into the intake for coolant temp.

I can't remember what model or year it was off of but it was an 85 amp one wire alternator, I think it was off a chebby silverado pick up with towing package or something like that.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look at the ones you're using to see if they're same physical size as I have now but with an internal regulator.
