Mirrors, again
I thought there had been a post on taking apart, and restoring, outside mirrors. But I cannot find it.
My mirror folds in at speed and I would like to make it "tighter" but I cannot figure out how to access the nut inside the stem. Suggestions? |

A very long thin socket? I think that is what you use to stop the mirror from folding in...
The only other access is through the glass. You have to take the glass out, either by prying on the black plastic retainer around the edge of the glass (and praying that it doesn't break they way 90% of them do), or by breaking the glass. I don't know how to get ahold of a new black plastic retainer, but just about any auto glass shop can cut you a new mirror... --DD

Thanks Dave. I am sure my long sockets will not clear the space between the nut and the .. thing, but I will check anyway. Cheers.

Dave, can the old retainer be re-used? is it needed if the glass is reinstalled?

The retainer is what keeps the glass in. You can re-use it if it's intact and if you don't break it putting everything back together again.
