DTM in a 914!
http://www.shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=65728
Thats a post over on my forum with alot of pics... Long story short I had a blast with my little low power 912E! even more than that it was the weekend of proving for the DTM at the track! This car previously had a FAT 11 Blade 911 fan and shroud..... It now runs 50-75 degrees COOLER all the time and NO OTHER CHANGES WERE MADE TO THE ENGINE TILL AFTER IT WAS RAN FOR A COMPARISON! So now, the DTM is proven in every single way possible... Dyno, Street and Road Track! Look for a post from the car owner explaining what he saw in the cockpit- and felt in the seat of his pants!

This was the first DTM to go into a 914. The shroud is the same as all the rest of the DTMs... we never tried to make it fit into a 914 before. In a stock car the rain tray would have to go and the decklid be slightly trimmed for the hatch to shut fully.

Anyone know what a "DTM" is, other than the German touring car racing series, that is. . .

Spec of my car:
1973 GA 2.0 MOTOR, D-JET Jake, if I want to put a DTM kit in my car (without carb now...maybe in the future) which stage do I need? I'm looking for a kit that requires minimum DIY (BOLT IT ON). Thx! ![]()

The DTM is not compatible with D or L Jet.... Nust use individual runner EFI or carbs...
Reason # 4,345,581 to throw the stock EFI system out the window at 120 MPH!

Not only that, but you have to cut the rear deck lid for the DTM to fit (if I read the STF post correctly). Or have a removable one, like the car that has the DTM in it currently.
At least at this point, it sounds like a race-car-only thing for a 914. --DD

It would fit with slight cutting of the decklids sealing lip....
I can change the mold 10% up top and not change the cooling at all. We are doing that now.

For a street car the nice thing about the stock cooling system, is that if the belt breaks it will run till the battery goes flat. Steve

Steve's point is well taken. I've spun the belt off my T4 several times, or broken one, and it's nice to not worry about cooking the motor as a result.

That is a nicer point of the stock system... But u\its weight and bulkiness is not. The DTM is a one piece design and slides right over the engine. It weighs 9 pounds!
The stock 914 alternator is a less than fun experience to replace and it uses an external regulator. The DTM uses beetle parts and a brand new alternator with internal regulator cost 129.00. It can be removed and replaced in the car in less than 20 minutes with two wrenchs (11 and 13mm) www.massivetype4.com is the website addy for the DTM. Thrown belts are not a common occurance. Since the DTM is built on top of a TIV engine longblock the alternator stand is set up and the deflection from the lead to trail sides of the belt are aligned infinately. Mark takes his engine to 8,000 RPM and the belt stays on.

Sounds great, but will it be a direct bolt on? Im really not interested in cutting up the rain tray/rear deck lid.

And what about those lucky enough to have operative stock FI? (knock on wood!)

In that case, you keep the stock system. Jake is not a fan (perhaps that's way too mild a way of putting it) of the stock FI system.

I am not a slave to "originality," but as long as it works I leave it as is then "upgrade" as needed. Kind of the rolling rebuild always in progress. Besides wife is still angry at MG and a Mini project taking over garage . . .
