DPR cranks
Hi folks,
I am a 914 driver from Germany and looking for the homepage of DPR to get details about their cranks. Can anybody give me the address of DPR's web site? Cheers, Louis |

They do not have a website. Aircooled.Net sells their cranks. They also make my crankshafts for all my engines- great work.

Many thanks to you Jake and Alfred!
Do you know if the people DPR sell their cranks directly or if they sell it only to their distributors, e. g. aircooled.net? How many horses do you make normally out of 96x78 in the US? In Germany, 103x71 is very popular because there are only expensive Scat cranks. 103x71 does not seem to be very popular in the US, is it? Why not? Cheers, Louis |

Louis,
I believe that there is an issue with proper sealing between the cylinder heads and (iron) barrels for pistons with bores greater than 96mm. Have a look at this post on Jake's forum for an answer to how much hp the 2270s make. |

103s are becoming more and more "found out" in the sense that they just are not a wise choice. I won't use them unless thay are Nickies.
I dedicated my testing to small bored engines and we now make more power with 3-4 times the lifespan of 103 bored engines. To my knowldege DPR only uses aircooled.net for their distribution of TIV cranks.. I have had ONE fail in 500 engines.

yes, but is it considered a general problem or rather a problem involved with the available 103 P/C kits? Another reason why the german builders do not like to use the 96X78 setup is because they say the quality of the 96 P/C kits is very bad. What do you use, VW liners with JE pistons?

The quality of the worst 96 is better than most 103s...
I bore German OEM cylinders to 96mm, and then use either custom JE pistons are KBs... Using 103s is made more complicated by the TIV not having a square bore spacing, cylinder head design, the head casting and etc.... In my opinion 103s just suck, and the TIV head without extensive modification cannot "cycle the chamber" enough for the 4" bore... The answer is NOT bigger valves either.

hmm,
I have a 103 P/C kit from Mahle waiting to be built in. They are said to be of great quality. The problem is that german engine builders do not recommend the 103 bore when using the original fan shroud, only when using a 911 type shroud. That's why I am hesitating and looking for alternatives. Are KBs forged pistons? What about cast pistons, would you recommend using them? Another problem of course is the custom duties involved with the importation of parts from the US. That's why many stick to the available parts. That means not changing cranks unless you want a 26xx engine. this is the real reason for the popularity of the 103x71 setup. What do you understand by "extensive modification" of the heads? Cheers, Louis |

Ok Jake,
I have read the information on your web page, so that I know now that you do recommend using KB pistons. You have to consider that in Germany the market is more for Bugs and the rest of the VW aircooled family. That means that only few people have experience in what can be done to a TIV engine whilst keeping the original fan shroud. Your web page is very interesting for me particularly in that respect. As I want an engine for a 914 and keep the fan shroud, I am looking for alternatives on the US market. More concretely, I am considering ordering a crank, some rods and pistons to build a 2270 or 2316 engine. I wonder whether aircooledtechnology or airecooled.net is the place to order. Any suggestions? Louis |

If you want just parts, ACN. If you want an engine kit, complete, talk to Jake at aircooledtechnology. (That's the Jake who posted above, there.)

The stock cooling system is just as effective as the 911. I did not test the stock arrangement against a 911 in my extensive testing but have built the same exact engine with both styles of cooling and did comparisons... Stock isn't that bad at all!
More cooling issues can be remedied by a new combination of the engine... a stock engine is one of the hottest runners in the world! My 2316 @ 10:1 in my car runs the same temp as the old stock 2.0 did! but its almost 2 times more powerful.

And what would you say about the combo 103mm bore kit (supposing it is of good quality) with the stock cooling system?
