Cracked windshield

Well, it finally happened. A while back I hit a ladder on the freeway. Bounced the right hand side of the windshield loose and broke most of the trim clips on that side. Last night I saw a crack starting at the bottom edge. Today there are two and growing like weeds.

I've read posts before mentioning that some replacement windshields are better than others but can't find them now. Any advice would be appreciated before I call the insurance on Monday. How about first, second, third, (and last) choice for manufacturer. Also, any recomendations for a repair shop in the So. Cal / Inland Empire area?

TIA

Go to Safe-t-lite auto glass, they will do it for $180 w/ tint $170 W/out tint. Installed and everything. They do good job, I've had two done by them. It's cheaper than $1200 for factory glass no?

The question on glass came up at D&Gs over the weekend, I have had two replaced. Both times with PPG glass and by a mobile shop that comes out and puts it in for you....last time, five years ago....it cost me $120 installed. I also used a seal from a 1988 Plymouth Voyager rear window...it is a little long, but I cut a piece out and sectioned it in at the bottom of the window.

I do not do a lot of rain driving, but the little I have done, no leaks. The price was like $25.00....

Hope that helps...

Got a verbal quote today from "Safelite Auto Glass" in Ontario, CA. (Jim, Is that who you mean?) $130+tax installed with free on-site service. PPG glass no problem. I need to supply the trim clips, but their person will install.

So... I need to get the trim clips ASAP. Can't find them in the Pelican Catalog. Hey Pelican Parts! Can you help?

Is it standard procedure to replace the rubber seal at the same time? Mine looks OK. Should the installer be able to remove the old glass without destroying the seal?

Hey Jeff... Know how you feel. My glass is also sand blasted. I am looking forward to a clear view while driving into one of our beutiful (brown) so cal sunsets.

Call the warehouse, 888/280-7799. That's the easiest and fastest way to see if we have the clips. Don't ask me--I am six hours away from the warehouse, so I can't exactly pop over and ask them...

Thats who i'm taking about. Pretty resonable prices I thought. Though you did get a better price, i'll keep that in mind when i do mine. Everything in Silicon Valley gets jacked up you know. Oh well that's the price you pay for living here "grin and bear it".

Hi Matt,
please post your results after you have the glass replaced. Could you also forward their number so i can contact them too? is the glass you're getting tinted or not?.. i seem to remember some posts a while back saying that non-tinted windows were becoming very hard to find.. i personally wouldn't mind the tint (since i've taken my visors off) but am just curious..

thanks,

Jeff

Hi Jim,

actually, i didn't like the way they looked.. and it was a bit loose (the driver side would pop off the center part every once in a while) i just like the cleaner look without the visor..

The number for Safelite Auto Glass (Ontario, CA): 909-390-7711
They had several more numbers / locations in the inland empire area. I made a point to request an untinted window. They said no problem.

Speaking of visors...
I fabbed a set of metal clips (machined aluminum with pressed-in steel pins) to replace the crappy plastic ones. I've had them in my car for a couple of years now. Great to be able to tighten the visors without worrying about breaking the clips. Look good too.
If you were at D+G, you might have seen them in my car. I have a couple extra sets for sale. Took them to D+G to see if any interest. I'd like to think that they are better than a new plastic set (about $68 from Pelican, no offense). If enough interest, I could make more and maybe get them anodized in the color of your choice. No set price yet. Any offers?
Could have some pics by late next week. Send me your email address and I will try to reply.
