Ignition Timing Specs

Just got my Teener back on the road and now for the hard part. Need to fine tune and adjust. Engine just rebuilt from bottom up and added new stuff. Need recommendations and advice. Here's the deal:

1973 1.7 big jugs (now 2.1)
dual 40 Webbers (ugh)
Progressive Web Cam
Mallory HighFire VI-AL Ignition System (NEW)
Mallory Distributor(NEW)

I think the carbs are close but not sure at all about what the timing should be. The car runs and idles well, just doesn't seem to have the umph that I would expect this upgrade to have. Not much difference at all from the 1.7 in before. Any suggestions on timming and spark plug gapping?

Any cars out there with similar setup?

Hi hutchwe, I have the same question for my 103X76 type 4. I want to get the Mallory dizzy but don't know the correct set up. Jake said to tune the dizzy on a dyno but no time or money to get to dyno. Is the dizzy std or vac advance. How about 29 degrees at 3500 rpm? I think that is my set up and stock is 27 degrees? I will do some more research and may be come up with something. I have read some where that initial timing depends on duration of cam and shape of head. I lot the print out of what I have read. I just want the motor to pull harder and not detonate itself to death. I also want to trash my 009 dist. Good luck Mark

Thanks Mark! The information you provided was very informative. I actually was looking for someone with that configuation to chime in and tell me what to set it at. I have no particular experience with setting distributor advances and was actually hoping to tell my mechanic what to set it at. Your reply was very much appreciated.

Any other thoughts?

The advice I've heard for the Mallory (and I believe this may even have come from Jake), is to use the grey springs and time it so the max advance is at 28-29 degrees. Let the idle timing fall where it falls.

hutchwe and lapuwali, That is where I am running my 009 dizzy at right now. I have no idea where th e static timing is but I will be getting the Mallory soon. I did try to run it at 32 degrees with 1/3 108 race gas and 91 super but it was a little to far at startup, and when I was going up a hill in the wrong gear. I agree with the 28-29, I just want a better advance. I want to get the vacuum advance Mallory and tune it to my motor. Good luck Mark
