Turn signal switch repair

I recieved a replacement turn signal switch/ washer, wiper switch from Bob Bischoff, thanks again Bob, and installed the unit. Found my washer switch would not function and the high beam/low beam switch wasn't functioning also. Being a typical 914 owner, I did the usual. Yelp, took it apart. Got the washer to work(converted from pneumatic switch to electrical) but on working the turn signal switch, BOINGGGG! Pieces everywhere. Collected them up and using the restrunction techinque, "One of these things does not look like the other", got the switch back together, except for, that long metal flat rod that holds the, I believe to be, cancelation prong protruding into the center stering colum hole. WHERE DOES THIS THING GO?! How does the flat metal spring fit into the base and still allow insertion of the prong?

Thanks,
L. McChesney

O.K. PLEASE tell me how the heck you put all the springs back in without a spring popping out somewhere! I am stripping pieces off my other 914 that I keep loosing. I am very frustrated tonight so I quit. I guess I will have to drive the gas hog tomorrow.

Elwood, it requires a lot of Canadian Club.
When I went through this, it drove me nuts. I could not find a source for guidance. Thanks to Bob, I got a working switch. But being a 914 person, I had to take it a part. I submitted a Tech Article to Wayne at PP, but it has not been updated as yet. With permision from the forum administration, I could post it here. Otherwise, email me and I can send it as an attachment (263Kb).
If my directions do not transfer the information, call me or send me the unit and I'll give it a try.

L.McChesney,

Thanks for the reply. I stayed home today and after a hundred times that the one of the springs flew out, and me thinking I'd better sell this damn thing, I got it. I tied the contacts with the 4 little springs down with dental floss. I also ran dental floss in the track to keep the lower nylon hook in place. It was still a bear to get it all back together but hey I guess if we keep these cars we all have to test our patience. Thanks again.

Dental floss. Multiple uses.
Glad you got it fixed.
