color dilemma
Okay, I'm getting very close to being ready to paint my car. The car was originally Bahia Red (I think; the color code tag is gone). This is by no means a true restoration. It is a 73 six conversion, so originality is not an issue per se. But, I do want to keep the car somewhat true to its roots. So I definitely want to keep the car red, but I'm partial to guards red, which was never a 914 color.
Any thoughts?

Paint it the color YOU want and that makes YOU happy. I just got mine back from the body shop and wanted a porsche color but not the original silver.....ended up having them mix up Arctic Silver and man it looks great. Purists might have an issue with that, but I'm happy and that is what counts.
Do your thing! Guards Red would look great! Jim p.s. I think it would look great with the top sanded smooth and painted guards red...targa bar guards red...and the rockers/valences guards red!

I agree
![]() The 914 I bought in 2001 was Olympic Blue from the factory. I really didn't care for the color but the price was right and the car was complete. I ended up painting it Ravanna Green...I think the car looks great and I enjoy driving it (when I have time). Paint it a color you will be happy with !!!! One of the best things about these cars are the owners. It is very rare to see two 914's the exact same. We all add our own touches to the cars...THAT makes them such a great car and why you see a bunch of crazy guys walking around a someones 914 over and over agian..........Plus thay are FUN to drive. Cheers and enjoy Kerry ![]()

Aaaahndy over on the 914club BBS had his 914 painted Guards Red. It doesn't look half bad....
Actually, I think I prefer Bahia Red, as it has more blue and less yellow in it than Guards Red. But everybody's tastes are different. If you do change the color, do it right. Have the interior painted as well--front and rear trunks, engine bay, cockpit, door jambs, everything. Otherwise it will look like your paint has faded if anyone catches a glimpse of the interior panels. --DD

I have the car completely apart, so everything will be painted. I am going to do the top -- sand it smooth and paint the body color. I do like that look. I hadn't thought about the rockers and vallances though....
Are there any good pix of the Bahia Red? Mine is so old that it's hard to tell what it really looked like, but I actually do prefer less orenge and more blue, so maybe the Bahia would be good after all.... Hmmm decisions decisions.

Here is mine back from the body shop...now don't look at the rims as they are coming off soon with a 5-lug conversion, but you'll get the idea of top and rockers/valances the same color

That is an awesome website with all of the colors. I agree with everyone, paint it whatever color you like. I'm sure I have one of the only tangerine 74' 1.8's (as that wasn't an option) but I just liked it better than signal orange.

Here's a pic of my 72 Bahia Red 914 when owned by PO.
![]() The car now is in need of a repaint and I'm torn between staying with the Bahia Red or doing a Guards Red. Either way, I plan on having the bumpers, valances, rockers and top done as well.

It wasn't a stock 914 color. It was special-ordered on a number of them, but it wasn't a stock color.

Has anyone else seen the current car and driver mag? They did a road test of the carrera GT, and it is the neatest color of red I have seen on any car, EVER. It looks absolutely amazing. The shade almost looks as if they painted it white, and then red. It's hard to describe, but looks too cool for words. The price would no doubt be steep to duplicate though.

Bahia Red 914
Here is my 914 that is Bahia red, with the roof, the rockers and the valences painted body color.
http://www.perrinefamily.org/photogallery/91onlift.jpg. I had the car painted inside, outside and underneath to make sure that the green that it used to be painted did not show up anywhere on it.

Choosing a color is always handwringing. Not to mention, satisfying your family's desires if that is important. The Porsche web site has a program where you can change the color to the car to compare. Does anyone know of a similar program where you could insert a picture of your car and change the color to a new one? Seems as if that would help the decision process.

Have you tried the Bus Selecta-type program? I found a link to it at http://www.busselecta.com .
http://www.retromotorcompany.co.uk/selecta/ps.htm It doesn't have all the colors, much less with their "marketing" names, but at least you can mess with different colors and such. --DD

Thanks as always Dave. That is exactly what I was seeking. Too bad we cannot add other colors.
The boys cannot decide on the color. Andrew wants a dark metalic gray and Eric/David wants dark metalic blue. Wife, doesn't care. Myself, I want yellow so it goes faster. Oh, by the way, does a PP sticker provide incressed MPH or BHP? L. McC |
