How to replace fuel pump?
Im buying a 73 and it still has the FI system. The owner says the fuel pump needs replaced.
Anyone explain what needs to be done and how difficult it will be? Thanks. |

it's fairly straight-forward, though I'm writing this from memory...... in your front trunk just behind the spare wheel is a bulge in the carpet. Lift it up and undo the 2 bolts in the middle of the black cover, then undo the 4 bolts holding the cover on. With the cover out of the way you can then see the pump in all it's glory. The tricky thing I found was undoing the clamps holding the fuel lines on in such a confined space - you may find it easier to remove the tank.
But the 1st question you need to ask is - why does the previous / current owner think it's the pump that needs replacing? It may be worth getting a 2nd opinion. |

Replacement is straightforward. I would consider moving it to the front. You will want to replace rubber fuel hoses and the filter concurrently.
You don't necessarily have to use same type of pump. The style pump they used on the later '75+'76 cars can be had for much cheaper. I believe someone has a kit to move the pump up front, down to the bump in the trunk to mount the pump, mine is down by the steering rack
