New Ride
Check out this 914 I just picked up. Maybe somebody can explain what I have here. It is a 70 that appears to have a 1.7, but it has a factory front sway bar, european tail lights and that bullet shaped mirror on it. I found it on a tucked away street around the corner under a car cover. Best part is that it has no rust in the trunk and as far as I can tell no rust under the battery. Anyways maybe somebody can explain to me why it has all of these options.
Thanks for the help. ![]() |

Someone added them, plain and simple. It's trivial to bolt-on the mirrors (which were never offered by the factory on a 914) and the European taillights, and it's not that hard to fit a sway bar either. And very highly recommended by just about everyone in the 914 world, so it's not at all surprising when a car does have the front bar.

Pedrinis. Four "spokes" go to lug bolts, the other four in between them. On the Mahle wheel, all eight "spokes" go in between the lug bolts.

Thanks Dave, now I won't feel so bad taking off all the goodies and transplanting them to my green car. By the way, did you ever get your car going? I've been away from the forums for about six months now and was just curious.

The mirror appears to be a Talbot mirror which if authentic is worth a few hundred in excellent condition. They were a period addition to many cars in the 50's, 60's and standard equipment on MB 300SL's....so you might have scored there!
Good job! Mike

Interesting... I didn't realize those were worth anything. There was a broken one on a 914 that I test-drove quite a while back.
Speedo, my car still isn't "right", but it is running again! Lotsa little problems, plus a couple of biggies, were what kept it off the road. But I've been driving it every day for most of a month now!! ![]() --DD

Dave, Cool I hope to get mine going here soon as well. Sold the 1.7 out of the green car and took a 2.0 as a core about seven months ago. I hope to have that same 2.0 ready in a few weeks.
Mike how can I tell for sure? I'll have to go down to the yard and get a better look. All I really remember was that the mirror was stamped with berlin on the blurry part you can't make out. Thanks for the info though, I was planning on putting that mirror on my 911. |

The mirror should have the stamping on the button or dot on top of the mirror. Sometimes the button in green in color. The company name 'Talbot' should be on it as well. If you see 'Berlin' on it, that's a good sign as Talbot was from Berlin. These mirrors are only available in reproduction now.
Here's a link to the reproduction ones... http://www.talbotco.com/talbot_mirror.htm Mike
