Cool Checkout my new rotors!

As soon as my PP order gets here with bearings, I'm slappin' in these rotors when I do front brakes. Ain't they kwule? Got 'em at Stock zinneman rotors, drilled and heat treated. Could have got slotted too. Did the rear rotors last year so it will be a while before I match all around, but the fronts do the work anyway.

I hadn't heard of those rotors before. Do they actually cool better?

I'll admit, I don't have any quantitative info about these rotors. Vented and drilled rotors are "supposed" to cool better. Actually, almost all new sporty cars have 'em it seems (I'm not talking about the paddy-racers, I mean Porsche, Audi, Lexus, etc). I was drawn in by the glitz.... Arrrrgh, the agony. OK. All better now.

So they're $140 just for the rotors and an additional $55 for the drill/slot option?

Pelican sells or used to sell the same thing. "Zimmerman", by the way.

I feel that holes in solid rotors are useless... They have some use in vented rotors, because the gases from the brake pads have someplace to go (the vents between the two friction surfaces), but the only place to go on a solid rotor is--in the hole.

Plus drilled rotors will crack. I hope you like looking at those rotors, because you really should do that at least every month, checking for cracks. When any crack goes all the way from one hole to another, or gets to the edge of the rotor, you throw the rotor away.

Dave-
1. PP didn't sell 'em (but I didn't ask anyone either, just don't list 'em).
2. Zimmerman, yeah.
3. So I shoulda gotten slots, too? Well, I guess I should of stayed solid...
4. Mark- Well, since I didn't slot, it was a little less. PP's solid rotors are like $40 apiece, so the drilling (and heat treating- won't this reduce odds of cracking, Dave?) about doubled it. I got free shipping, too. Thats gotta be worth 8 or 10 bucks.
5. I'll let you know how they work out....

The solid rotor will not prematurely crack if the hole is chamfered on both sides. Remember that the whole drilling rotor thing was attempt to loose weight not for better braking. You may even get a bump in brake performance. Try them and let us know.

What do you think the weight reduction would be? I'd guess maybe 3% tops just looking at the number and size of the holes. Wouldn't seem that significant. Someone have some numbers comparing stock rotor weight to drilled?

The history behind it was the racing scene in the 60'S were drilling everything in the car to reduce weight. It was an accumulative effect. They drilled everything. The more efficient braking was not the driving force behind the mod, just a special happy accident.

Scott, the rotors do look very nice. Will you do anything to the calipers?

They were cleaned and painted with high temp silver a couple of years ago. I think that looks fine. If I had big Brembo calipers or sumthin', I might paint a brighter color, but the silver just looks clean without standing out.

Drill some holes in the calipers too, to match the rotors. Then you can have brake fluid cooled rotors. Hehehehe!

Do you suppose you can think of a way to cool 'em with gasoline?
Try it on your car first, OK?

I know. Me too. I did hesitate to send that smartass comment last night, but you had already said "flinch!", so I sent it. I don't think they will be WORSE than stock, anyway. BTW, another good weight reduction method is to park the car in the northeast for a few years.
