There are a few VR6 motors for sale on ebay right now.

mike you do bring up a good point. i am taking the stealth a little too far, but i still think a grille like the 914-8's had would work well and look pretty cool. The thing is a lot of the aftermarket air dams look out of place, in my opinion, but like you said, people dont know these cars, so they may think its stock, but i would know.:p
Anybody know about exhausts for these engines that dont make it sound like a honda? Magnaflow's isnt bad, but it still sounds a little too "ricer" |
I'm waiting to hear what the base Cayenne sounds like, supposedly it has a really great sound to it....from the pictures I've seen, they made it a true dual exhaust....cylinder 1,2 and 3 have one muffler and cylinders 4,5 and 6 have the other muffler
I think the VR6 is going to sound wicked with the 10.5:1 compression.....I'll be able to run much bigger pipes as well compared to how the factory pipes are in the Jettas..... |
I've heard a non-turbo Cayenne and they actually sounds pretty similar to a 928. A little bit more smooth and a little bit throatier. I think it sounds pretty good. Still not too sure if I like the idea of porsche making an suv though...
I think that even a stock VR6 would sound like it wants to eat you with the setup you would have to use. (Probably no resonators, and big, short pipes) I think if you yank the resonator(s) it would give the car a more agressive tone, and not so much of a drone. I was thinking about a pacesetter, but i've never heard one on a vr6. |
Poo, he's talking about the new "under-base-model" Cayenne; the one that doesn't even have an "S" designation. It has a modified 3.2L VR6 motor in it.

Does that mean that Porsche is using two different V6s in the Cayenne? I went to the Porsche web site and looked at the engine specs for the base model Cayenne. The engine is described as having "Dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, continuous inlet & exhaust camshaft adjustment. 3.2 liters, front-mounted, water-cooled, V-6 engine." There's no mention of the V angle but the base model Touareg's motor is described on the VW web site as "3.2L V6, 220 horsepower, 6 cylinder, 4V, 15°, gas." The 3.0L V6 used in the Audi A4 is a "3.0 liter V6 with variable intake manifold; DOHC with 5 valves per cylinder".
Here's a picture from Porsche's web site of their 3.2L V6 and it's not the VR6 motor. http://content2.us.porsche.com/prod/...tungen_big.jpg |
I have read articles claiming that the Cayenne V6 was indeed the VR-6. A quick Google search turns up, among others, this article.

ah, i got ya. But the v8 non-turbo model does sound nice;)

According to Autoweek, it is, in fact, the VR6 motor. "Porsche turns once again to VW for engine help (press materials only say the engine is “supplied from outside the Company”), lifting the 3.2-liter 15-degree V6 for duty in the entry-level Cayenne."
|
yep......base chili-pepper is a VR6....I am not too sure why they ditched the "R", might have something to do with trying to distance themselves marketing wise from using a compact car based engine ???
the picture above with the 3.2 plastic cover is just that, a cover to make the motor appear larger and more pleasing to the eye (I'd rather see metal and the real thing, not a plastic facade what I've been trying to find out is if the base-Cayenne V6 engine uses an aluminum block or not. I've read one article stating that it does, but it could be wrong....the RS32 VW GTI which uses the same 3.2 motor is still a cast iron block. I don't think Porsche would have spent the extra money to have new blocks cast from aluminum for thier Cayenne, but who knows, maybe they did...... |
The VR6 is only 2.8L. At least mine is. The VR6 is a real tight V, hence where the 'R' comes from meaning "inline". Based on that picture of the 3.2 it looks like a wider angle on the V. I don't think it's the same engine but I could be wrong.

There are quite a few similarities between the Cayenne and 914. Both are joint ventures between VW and Porsche, the base model Cayenne uses a VW motor just like the base model 914 did and Porsche is a little embarrassed by both base models ("press materials only say the engine is 'supplied from outside the Company' ").

here is a Cayenne V6 intake manifold...same basic design as the 2.8 VR6 with the intake plenums crossing over the single head
the VR6 started out as a 12 valve 2.8 liter motor, then it got 24 valves....now it's a 3.2 liter motor with 24 valves...same basic engine used in the 240hp AWD Golf R32...even for the Golf, they ditched the "R" for some reason. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1095609985.jpg |
Whoa, check out the sound of this VR6 powered Golf. I'm not sure if he modified the motor or not.
|
so I heard that Kennedy Engineering is making another VR6 adapter plate setup to be used in a 914....did you order one Alfred?

I don't actually pick up my VR6 from the seller until March (I gave him a down payment and we signed a bill of sale). I'm just reading on the VWvortex board that there's somebody else out there asking about this transplant. Maybe that's the guy .... Also, Momentum Motor Parts up here said that they thought the MK3 VR6 that I bought doesn't have an immobilzer. I think that's good news. I contacted Electromotive for the price of a complete closed loop version of their TEC3 system for a VR6 and they said "The ecu retails for $1999, the harness is $160 and coil pack for 6 cylinder is also $160. If it's the VR6 with the factory trigger wheel 60 -2, you can use it as well as the trigger wheel sensor. The only additional sensor which you'll require is a MAP sensor." I hope that I can make the OE engine management work.

Maybe a few years down the road when my 914 needs more power I can install one of these.
http://www.awe-tuning.com/media/prod...-golf3-kit.jpg Approximate total cost for 255 hp motor: $2000 for vr6 engine $1000 for adapter and clutch package $3500 for complete supercharger kit $1500 for miscellaneous stuff -------- $8000 About the same price as a 160 hp Type IV motor. ---- Edit: Subtract $1000 if I install one of these turbochargers instead. |
I love the 3.2 VR6 in my Golf - it's awesome. 240hp, smooth and plenty of torque. Ah, my garage is a most happy place !

update....
the Kennedy Engineering adapter plate and flywheel showed up to HPH today....I also picked up a Stage II 228mm pressure plate from Brad R...thanks I hope to bolt up the transmission this weekend and get an official start on the project http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1096583464.jpg |
