Simple question: How long for cylinder...

How long should it take for the cross hatch pattern to dissappear from freshly honed cylinders? I have an engine out right now that has about 1.5k on it with a fresh rebuild and there is no discernable pattern left.

well, I guess that just depends how agressive you honed it the first time. As long as you are making good compression, I wouldn't sweat it, although I can say when I rebuilt mine, it had about 60k on it, and still had all the cross-hatching, or most anyhow. AND it had been severly overheated. It probably just wasn't cross-hatched for as long, or with as agressive of grit.

Yes, it really depends on several things. Whether there was a correct crosshatch pattern when honed and the stone grit used. The type of rings can make a difference. Cast iron rings can wear the cylinder walls quicker than chrome or moly rings. So as silver said nothing to worry about and it's good you still have cross-hatching as long as the rings have seated properly. The crosshatching provides good oil retention properties.

Thanks guys. I had the same experience as silver with my own engine so I had concerns when I didn't see any marks. I am fixing this engine for a local pelican head. It dropped a valve seat. I didn't want to do a complete top end on this thing if not necessary.
I'll do more lookng around in the jugs.
