next mods.?
Well, I did it. I just picked up my first 914. A 74' 2.0. The car has been modified in that it has a big bore kit, dual webbers, 009 dist w/ele ignition, short shift kit front and rear sway bars and lowered 2" all around. I would like to get into club racing, not autox, but wheel to wheel. What is my next step in preping the car? I realize a roll bar/cage, fuel cell and bigger brakes are in order, but where do I start? I don't want to go broke, but I do have money set aside for this car. I have built many cars and bikes but this is my first 914 and I don't know all the in's and out's yet. Sorry this is so long ,but I'm just jazzed up to get going!

Start by getting the rule book of the POC or Vara.

Welcome to site. This is a great resource and our host is an excellent place to get parts. Not planning on racing my car so I can't help you out there, but either contact PCA if you want to race with them or SCCA. And yeah, what Steve said...rule book is a must.

Actually, if you're interested in wheel-to-wheel racing, the local PCA rules won't be of much help. AFAIK, only "PCA Club Racing" does the wheel-to-wheel stuff in PCA. Check on http://www.pca.org for info on how to get the rule book.
SCCA--go to http://www.scca.org and check for rule books on "Improved Touring" and "Production" class racing. NASA runs wheel-to-wheel events as well. http://www.nasaproracing.com . I'm not sure who else runs w2w events. But Step Zero is always to RTFR, Read The Rulebook. You'll find that in some/many/most cases, the big-bore kit, carbs, and aftermarket distributor will throw you into a class you don't really want to be in. (E.g., PCA's "GT" classes, where there is no minimum weight and Big Big Bucks rule the day.) The rules will also specify what kinds of safety equipment you need. (E.g., roll cage, fire suit, SA-rated helmet, fire supression system, etc.) You might want to consider autocrossing or Time Trial or Drivers Education in order to "get your feet wet" in a lower-risk environment. Again, check the rulebook to see what kind of safety equipment is needed. Usually less than for w2w events, as the risks are much lower. When doing autoX or TT or DE, the different Zones or Regions in PCA do have different rules. That's where you need to start researching the Zones/Regions in your area, and find their rulebooks. General rule of thumb on what stuff to get-- Repair and maintenance first. Safety equipment second. Seat time third. Go-fast goodies fourth. --DD

Thanks for the info. The rule book and drivers ed seem like the best starting point. I even have the wife's support!
