"GEX" rebuilt motors

Anyone know about GEX rebuilt motors??? I bought a couple rebuilt motors from them in my VW days and was very satisfied with their quality. They also do 914 motors, and I was wondering if anyone has any feedback on them. They also have resurfaced flywheels for 50-sum-odd bucks. Pelican is close to $200 for these. Check them out at http://www.gex.com .

The following was advice given me when I asked a similar question...

"Uuuuhhhh... You may want to think twice about the GEX motor. They don't seem to have a real stellar reputation in some circles. (If you want to start a flame-war on rec.autos.makers.volkswagen.aircooled, just ask about GEX motors...)

Try a Deja News search in that newsgroup on "GEX". Then make your own conclusions. I personally have no experience with them."

I also have no experience with them.

I heard all the GEX horror stories, but went ahead and bought an engine from them because of thier prices. I got the "powermaster" package with a few other options.... I've only put about 10k on the engine so far, but it runs well and compression is decent. (100psi cold) So chalk up one happy customer... so far.

Thier Powermaster package came with larger valves, hydraulic lifters and a mild cam. Then I added a HD oil pump, lightened flywheel, counterbalanced crank and got the whole deal balanced. I think the total was around $2500 or so, not exactally sure though.
