Talking fan belt replacement

does anyone know if the fan belt can be replaced without dropping the engine on a 76 914 california model 2.0 liter. also, can the smog pump pulley and bracket be removed from the crankshaft pulley with the engine in the car

I haven't done that job, but I do believe it is physically possible. A real pain, though.

since the last post I accomplished it quite easily. I did it when I was relaxed and not in a hurry and it took about 20 mins. here is how :
1. remove your belt buckle if your wearing one or use a canvas drop cloth to protect the paint
2. remove smog pump and belt (very easy)
3. disconnect one end of blower duct and move it out of the way
4. remove the three 10mm bolts that hold the smog pump pulley bracket to the engine (dont drop them)and work the bracket loose. It wont come off but it will turn on the shaft enough to produce clearance for the belt to slip on behind it.
5. there is a seperate little bracket (approx 6 inches long)that shares two of those three bolts that works as a belt keeper and you might hear it drop off so just reach in and retrieve it and hang on to it until you get the belt on.
6.once the belt is behind the bracket go ahead and refasten the bracket and belt keeper with the three 10mm bolts.
7. on a level surface place the car in 3rd gear then get the belt around the impeller and as far as you can around the alternator.
8. nudge the car forward while in 3rd gear and the belt will fall into place on the alternator pulley
9. start the car and if the red warning light is off and the volt meter reads more than 12 volts your all finished just put the blower duct back.
note: reconnecting the smog pump is optional. mine is in a cardboard box. I just plugged the two hoses which may or may not be necessary car runs fine either way

Ah, even better than I thought! Probably because I didn't think about just moving the bracket enough to get the belt on rather than removing it.
