v8 question
Hi All, I have a v8 question.
which 4 barrel carb, Carter afb, Edelbrock performer, rodchester Quadrajet, out of the three which one do you run and why? My application is for a 283 v8 with mild cam low compression heads. ![]() |

A Carter AFB or Edelbrock Performer carb (like model 1406, nearly identical to Carter), along with an Edelbrock Performer intake manifold (not the RPM model) and a round air cleaner will clear your engine lid without cutting the reinforcing crossmember.

With what I know I could build a complete cooling system including water pump for probably around $800 and definitely under $1000. It's tempting to market some plans but I better not...

With a light, manual transaxle vehicle, its best to run a carb with mechanical secondaries. I use a holley 600 double pumper on my 914 w/ a chevy 305, works great! I'd like to hear more on the $800 setup. I used a 85 vette radiator for mine, works well too and only cost $150.00 including the fan.

I am using all of David's stuff. I have some more radiator pics, but the one on webshots explains most of it, i will try to post mor pics this weekend. I just cant buy anything from that other V8 manufacturer.

What are the outside dimensions of that vette radiator? Is it a 4-core crossflow? I'd like to know of a stock radiator with dimensions of about 18x30. I know a radiator shop will build a custom unit with no radiator cap and only a petcock for air bleed, and hose stubs for 1" ID hose - that's what I have. Dual fans going to run from $100-$200 (cheaper from a wrecking yard). Radiator mount and shroud are angle stock and sheet metal, inexpensive but need to have tools/MIG/ability to do some metal fabrication. 3/4" pipe under the car maybe $25. 1" rad. hoses $25-$50. Remote electric water pump $280. Water header for block $100. Expansion tank, overflow tank maybe $50.

Why is that have some trouble with him? I spoke to David to day I will probably get the stuff I need from him also, It sound like it is better made Billet aluminum VS. cast. So do the copper lines go all the way to the back? |

The rad is a 2 row, 4 rows do not nessecarily cool better, and the vette is a bottom breather, as is a 914 v8 cooling module. The rad is 15.5x 27. The hard lines run under the car all the way to the rear. I was going to have a shop build a better radiator and they told me not to bother, 210 is a normal temp for extended high speed driving and the temp returns to 180 when I get off of the freeway. I dont know of anyone who has had problems w/Dave, he has treated me right. Mark |

If you go to www.corvetteactioncenter.com/tech/tools/carb.html, you can enter your own parameters ( 283 at 5500 RPM, etc ) and it will calculate the size carb you need. Most everyone goes MUCH too big !
I'm running a 500cfm Edelbrock on my 300HP 327 914. If your running hard cooling lines under the car, be VERY careful with speed bumps and any off road excursion. Once they're bumped, they don't bounce back like rubber which is why most people use rubber !!! Good luck ...

Formula, by the way, is ...
CID x Max RPM ------------------- 3456 So, for example, a 283 reving to 5500 would be ... ( 283 x 5500 ) / 3456 = 450.4cfm which is generous since the ve ( volume efficiency ) of most engines is only 85%. That would make it 450.4 x 85% = 382.5 cfm. Sounds ridiculous, doesn't it ...
