more turbo stuff
mr turbo2.0,
i'm curious as to what sort of tricks you have done to your turbo setup. are you running an intercooler? how do you regulate the wastegate? (i've been looking at grainger valves to do this on mine) do you have an O2 sensor and gauge? turbo boost gauge? how do you monitor your air/fuel ratio? are you running a blow off valve to keep your turbo spooled up between shifts? |

My system is a pull through system where the air and fuel are mixed in the carburetor and then drawn into the turbo and then pushed into the intake manifold. This design eliminates the possibilty of using an intercooler or pop off valve. The fuel would puddle and seperate from the air in an intercooler, and a pop off valve would allow air and fuel to escape to the atmosphere in the engine compartment. Boom. When I am driving hard, my shifts are quick enough that the turbo does not spool down enough to notice. I also can't run an adjustable boost controller in the drivers compartment. I don't like the idea of running a hose filled with pressurized air/fuel into the cockpit.
I have an O2 sensor in a box in my garage, but I havent got around to installing it yet. I played with jets for a long time until I got it where I was happy with it. It is still slightly rich ar idle, just enough to idle smooth, slightly rich at cruise/partial throttle, and strong rich at full throttle. I set it up by watching the plugs, the exhaust pipe, and listening to the engine. I could lean it out a little more, but i like it rich. Rich is cool, lean is hot, especially under boost. My waste gate is the kind that is integral to the turbo. It senses boost pressure and overcomes a spring to open the waste gate valve which allows the exhaust gasses to bypass the turbine. I cut the rod that goes to the valve and removed about three inches of it. I threaded one end with 1/4"20, and then welded a small piece of left hand threaded 1/4" rod to the other end. Then I installed a turnbuckle. That way I can regulate the boost but changing the length of the rod. If I make it shorter, the wastegate opens at a higher pressure and doesn't open quite as much. I have a boost gage in my center console. I am running 8 psi now. I have had it higher, but it is hard on the motor. My website has some more details, but I haven't updated it for a few months. no, i don't have a website on my car yet. i found some really informative websites on turbo mods for my setup. i'm running the chrysler 2.2 turboI setup for now, but am going to convert it to the turboII with an intercooler, BOV, 15-20psi boost, a fifth injector, two stage boost control with turbo boost gauge and O2 sensor gauge. without the BOV and intercooler this is only $50 worth of modifications to my engine to get 200+hp. (with internal modifications i'll be able to handle 30psi boost and get 300+hp)
would you consider running fuel injection? the same injection setup that is on my engine should work with yours. you'd need to figure out how to put the injectors into the intake manifolds, get fuel to them and run wiring. a couple of websites for mods for what i am looking at doing with my engine: http://idt.net/~gdonovan/turbo.html http://idt.net/~gdonovan/turbo_map.html http://idt.net/~gdonovan/turbo_tricks.html http://www.xmission.com/~dempsey/perform/ I looked at your website, and i really like what i see! feel free to ask questions about mine, too. if you have any suggestions i'm open for them. I'm quite familiar with your turbo. i have a couple of them myself, and my dad has a pile of them in the backyard. do you have ICQ? my number is 329697 [This message has been edited by TFI (edited 06-24-2000).] |
