What Years Were Chrome Bumpers Available?
What year 914's were offered with chrome bumpers from the factory? Were they an option on the years that they were available? I think standard on '73's?
Thanks, Steve |

IIRC,
1970-72 914-6 Chrome bumpers were standard... 1970-72 painted bumpers were standard on the 4 Cyl cars. Chrome bumpers optional.. no bumperettes on them 1973 Chrome bumpers Standard on 2.0 models, optional on 1.7 models, front bumpers had bumperttes, rears didnt 1974 Chrome standard on 2.0, optional on 1.8, both front and rear bumpers had bumperettes 1975-76 Rubber bumpers only... Also, any chrome bumper will bolt on to any year car... including 75-76 models once you remove the bumper shocks. |

Sure about the chrome? Didn't know the chrome was standard on 73 2.0's? I have an original 73 with a 2.0 and painted bumpers......hummmm

It's very difficult to say "all XX 914s had YY". There was enough variation that most times, it turns out there was an XX 914 that instead had ZZ... I know of one 73 2.0 that never had sway bars, for instance. So I would not be surprised to find a 73 2.0 with black bumpers, even though in theory the chrome ones came standard on them.
BTW, the chrome was an option on all 74s--it was not standard on the 2.0s that year. --DD

and the bumpers could have been painted at some point in the car's life. Just because of how it is now doesn't mean it's always been that way.

Quote by Dave....(So I would not be surprised to find a 73 2.0 with black bumpers, even though in theory it came standard on them.)
Too early in the morning. Does that sentence say black or chrome is standard on the 73. Mine does have the sway bars and black bumpers. I feel I know the history on this car pretty good and don't think the PO's would have had the knowledge to change the chrome for painted. Should I be looking for chrome bumpers to make mine "year correct"? Will try to post a pic of my car next. ![]() Jim |

Sorry, must'a been distracted when I wrote that. I re-worded it to hopefully make things more clear. Chrome was (in theory) standard on the 73 2.0 bumpers. But I wouldn't be surprised to find that some came with black bumpers.

73 2.0s had all the goodies...standard. 74 they were all options....but knowing the 914, there are ALWAYS exceptions.

And for one more tid bit of info, the 914-6 rear bumper has a sharp corner stamp section for the rear licence plate, where as the 914-4 bumpers are more rounded.

Actually, the early -4 rear bumpers were the same as the -6 rear bumpers. Same angled bump-in for the plate. I don't know where the break was, possibly mid-70 or mid-71, but the earliest -4s do have those bumpers.
